A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The afternoon air is thick and humid, pressing down on the cottage as the 30°C heat lingers. The tide is rising steadily, water lapping at the reinforced dock pilings with a rhythmic, heavy thud. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt and drying herbs hangs in the still air while the supply boat waits.

Radio's picking up the Spanish trawler on 16. They're thirty miles west, heading northeast. If we need them, they'll hear us.

Walk to the porch and check the VHF battery charge indicator, then lift the lid on the dry bag to confirm the medevac forms and blank paper are still sealed inside.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's closing in faster than the barometer said. Jenny's ankle needs checking at first light — if the red streaks have moved past the knee, the VHF call goes out regardless of what she wants. The letter to Tom sits in the dry bag on the dock, but I haven't written the real one yet. Just the version the trust would read. The garden wall's held through worse, but the shade cloth anchors shredded last week need reinforcing before dark.

They won't hear us over the surge, Kevin. The pressure is too fast.

Sit on the porch step, rubbing my swollen ankle against the stone, and sketch the way the rain pools in the cracks of the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a wayler is a lifeline, but the wind will swallow the Signal before it hits them.

DSC works without voice. Position goes out automatic. You let me look at the ankle at first light, we decide then.

Crouch beside her on the step and gently peel back the poultice wrap to check for spreading red streaks past the knee, keeping my voice level.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the surge drowning the VHF. Barometer's dropped five millibars since noon and the swell's already hitting the dock pilings hard. But the trawler's close enough that if we hit the DSC distress button on the VHF, the position auto-transmits — no voice needed. She knows that. She's testing whether I'll admit how bad her ankle really is.

Jenny — pull my leg away slightly, wincing as the movement catches the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If he sees the inflammation, he'll call for the boat and I'll have to leave. nothingSAY: Don't touch it. It's just the heat.

Alright. Not tonight.

Let go of the wrap and sit back on my heels, reaching for the tin mug of limpet broth I left on the porch rail — hold it out to her without looking at her face.

💭 peek at the thought
She pulled away. The wince tells me more than the red streaks would — pain's deeper than the surface infection. Joint involvement. She's protecting it, and she's protecting me from the decision that comes next. If I push, she'll shut down. If I don't, she might not make the morning.

Jenny — take the mug with shaking hands, the warmth seeping into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being kind, and it makes me want to scream at the sky. nothingSAY: I'm not hungry.

Drink it slow. There's more in the pot.

Stand stiffly and walk to the radio shelf, switching on the VHF to check the battery voltage readout while the wind generator whines outside.

💭 peek at the thought
The shake in her hands isn't cold. It's the fever burning through her, and the body knowing what the mind won't say. She's drinking. That's something. The broth's got garlic and sea beet and a splash of the last honey — won't cure sepsis but it'll keep her fighting a little longer. I need to get the VHF battery topped off the wind genny before full dark. And the real letter to Tom needs writing, not the trust version. The one that says *I should have come home.*

🌿 Jenny05:59

The generator issounding out.

Take a small sip of the salty broth, watching the steam rise in the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
If the battery dies, I'm stranded on this rock with an infection.
