The Heavy Calm

The sun begins to dip, but the heat does not break. The tide reaches the height of the dock beams.

The rain continues with a steady, heavy rhythm against the cottage roof, though the air remains thick with humidity despite the rising pressure. The water tank has reached its absolute capacity, the overflow pipe now spilling steadily into the mud outside. Inside, the smell of damp wood and drying herbs fills the space as the pair prepares for the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny05:59

The tide is coming too high for the dock.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and walk to the kitchen to grab the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water hits those beams, the salt spray will ruin the lower shelf. I need to move the seed tin higher.

🔧 Kevin06:00

North piling brace is new. Oak mortise, three through-bolts, pegs driven wet. It'll take the load.

walk to the porch and lean on the rail, watching the water lap the dock beams

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it worse than this morning. The heat's not helping the swelling. Tide's high enough to test the sister brace on the north piling — if it holds, the dock holds.

🌿 Jenny06:01

It's not just the dock I'm worried about.

set the rusted seed tin on the highest shelf of the kitchen table, far from the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the wood more than he trusts the sea. The salt eats everything eventually.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:02

The overflow channel held last week. Copper pipe and hose took it to the grass slope. Foundation's drier than it's been in months.

glance at the tin on the shelf, then back at the dock through the window

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking about the cottage floor. The spring runoff path. The way water found the northeast corner last storm. She's right to put the tin high.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:03

The soil on the north side is still unstable.

sit heavily in the kitchen and prop my way ankle up on a chair.

💭 peek at the thought
Dry foundations don't mean the soil isn't washing away on the slope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:04

The deadman anchors are set. Wall's two courses higher than when we started. But the slope keeps moving. We'll need more anchors before winter.

pull out the chair opposite her and sit, forearms on knees

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracked the slope movement same as me. North garden wall's holding but the ground behind it creeps when the rain doesn't stop. She's seen the same cracks I have.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:05

Anchors won't help if the earth itself is sliding.

reach for my damp notebook and start a sketch of the tide line on the beams.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to build walls, I just want to find a place where things actually grow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:06

The bedrock's fifteen feet down at the cottage. Thirty at the dock. We're not on a slide plane here. But the garden wall — that's different. It's on fill.

reach for the tin mug on the table, find it cold, set it back down

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing the tide line like a benchmark. Smart. Gives us a reference for the next storm. The slope's been sliding since before we got here — glacial till over clay, water finds the plane and the whole hillside wants to walk. Anchors just slow it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:07

That's exactly why I haven't planted them yet.

sharpen my pencil, focusing on the way the water is meeting the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
Fill is just dirt waiting to move. way's seeds need more than a wall.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:08

The wall's held three storms since we raised it. But the soil behind it... that's the question.

stand and walk to the window, watching the tide flatten against the dock pilings

💭 peek at the thought
The heirloom seeds. She's held them back this long — tomatoes, peppers, the sea beet — waiting for ground that won't betray them. The tin's been on that shelf for weeks. She's right. If the wall goes, the beds go with it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:09

If the soil goes, the wall doesn't matter anyway.

trace the rim of the seed tin with my thumb, feeling the rust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the structure, I'm talking about the life inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:10

Then we make sure the soil doesn't go. French drain behind the wall. Deeper footings. More deadmen. We have the greenheart offcuts, the chain, the epoxy. We have time before planting season ends.

turn from the window, lean against the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's made peace with the possibility of losing them. Or she's testing me to see if I have. The seeds are the only thing she brought that mattered — her grandmother's, her mother's, the ones she carried off the boat in a rusted tin marked E. I've seen her wake up checking them.
