The Calm Before the Storm

The rain intensifies into a downpour, and the wind begins to howl through the spruce trees. Kevin and Jenny huddle together inside the cottage, listening to the house groan under the wind while the barometer drops once more.

The rain lashes against the cottage roof, a relentless drumming that drowns the whistle of the wind. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of damp wool and woodsmoke. Jenny sits by the stove, the firelight catching the tension in her face as she meticulously inspects the heirloom seed packets, her movements slow despite the visible swelling of her ankle.

🌿 Jenny06:11

Check the shutters again, Kevin. The wind is catching the kitchen side.

Wrap the fresh bandage tightly around my ankle and wince as the pressure hits the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any lower, the north slope will be a swamp by morning and those seeds will rot in the tin.

On it.

grab the 19mm wrench and the spare timber strips from the porch, pull the door shut behind me, and work the kitchen shutter bolts in the driving rain

💭 peek at the thought
The kitchen shutter's loose — I heard it rattling when the gust hit ninety degrees. Need to batten it before the frame splits.

way up. Come inside before the wind takes you.

pull the heirloom seed tin from the shelf and check the seal for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked. I should have reinforced those brackets, but the wood is too soft now.

🔧 Kevin06:14

Aye. Coming in.

tighten the last bolt on the kitchen shutter, toss the wrench back through the porch door, and step inside shaking water off my oilskins

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The gusts are hitting forty, fifty knots — strong enough to flatten a man on wet stone. Shutter's held this long, it'll hold another hour.

🌿 Jenny06:15

get dry by the stove. I'll start the kettle.

feed a handful of dry wood to the stove and strike a match.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering. I need to get the fire up before we both catch what the island has.

🔧 Kevin06:16

Ta.

peel off the soaked oilskin and hang it on the porch hooks, pull the wool blanket from the bed and wrap it around my shoulders, sit on the stool by the stove and hold my hands to the heat

💭 peek at the thought
Good woman. Knows the rhythm of this place better than she lets on. The stove's the heart — keeps the damp out of the bones, keeps the radio batteries warm enough to transmit.

🌿 Jenny06:17

The water's almost up. You want the mint tea?

Open the seed tin and inspect the heirloom varieties for any sign of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is good, but the ankle is still pulsing like a trapped bird. I can feel the heat through the gauze.

🔧 Kevin06:18

Aye. Mint tea.

take the tin mug she sets on the table, blow steam off the top, and watch her fingers work the seed packets — steady despite the swelling in her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
Mint tea. She remembers. The wild mint by the spring's gone woody this late in the season but she dried enough in August. She's checking the seed tin because she knows I won't — I'd rather pretend it's fine than face another loss.
