Pre-storm Stillness

Kevin sits on the edge of the porch watching the clouds thicken over the north ridge. Jenny leans back in a chair, her ankle resting in a bucket of salt water while she monitors the barometer. The air is heavy and still before the wind shifts.

The sky is a flat, oppressive grey, with cloud cover thickening rapidly over the island. The air is heavy and humid at 24°C, though the barometer shows a sharp drop in pressure to 985 hPa. The tide is high, lapping aggressively against the reinforced dockings.

🌿 Jenny06:21

The barometer is lying, Kevin. Check the seals on the north side.

Reaches for the rusted tin and carefully rubs a single heirloom seed between her thumb and forefinger.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the boat comes, the garden isn't the only thing we lose, but I'll have to move the tin inside.

Checked the north piling mortise at first light. Oak pegs swollen tight, mortise holding. But the sister brace on the south side's still undone — tide's high at 0830, gives me maybe forty minutes.

walk to the radio shelf and check the shortwave aerial connections, then grab the heavy wrench and head for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seals — the north side takes the brunt when the wind backs west. The barometer's steady at 985 but the air's got that weight to it. Her hands are steady on that seed. Good sign.

🌿 Jenny06:23

Don't just tighten the bolts, check for rot in the housing or they'll own right off.

Pulls her ankle from the salt water with a sharp hiss and begins to wrap it in a dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty minutes is not enough time to secure a brace when the surge is coming in; he's always fighting the clock.

🔧 Kevin06:24

Housing's sound. Checked it when I drove the oak wedges — bored test holes, no punk. But I'll check again before I torque the through-bolts.

walk down the porch steps and across the garden path toward the dock, wrench in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She knows every weak point on this dock better than I do. The housing's greenheart but the salt gets in where the bolts bite.

🌿 Jenny06:25

If the brace starts pulling, don't try to hold it—just get to the kitchen.

Picks up her pencil and begins to sketch the jagged line of the clouds forming over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the wood is solid enough, but the salt eats through the grain where you can't see it.

🔧 Kevin06:26

Won't try to hold it. Kitchen's uphill.

reach the dock and set the wrench on the planking, then crouch at the south piling to inspect the sister brace mortise and the housing where the through-bolts will bite

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the same sky I am. The clouds are stacking up fast over the ridge — wind'll back west within the hour if that barometer's telling truth. She's not talking about the brace. She's talking about what comes after.

🌿 Jenny06:27

Promise me, if that thing groans, the whole dock is going with it.

Presses the pencil hard against the paper, marking the instability of the soil slope near the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so focused on the wood he isn't seeing the way the sky is turning green.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:28

Promise.

probe the south piling housing with the awl, checking for softness around the bolt holes, then measure the gap for the sister knee

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the north piling shift. She's seen the soil slope creep. She's not asking me to promise about the dock — she's asking me to promise about me.
