The storm breaks in

The wind picks up from the northeast, the smell of salt and wet earth filling the small cottage. The tide is at its peak, lapping against the dock, and the barometer continues to drop as the flat sky vanishes.

Kevin checked the south piling sister brace bolts and found them holding firm despite the rising surge. Jenny prepared a fresh sea beet poultice for her ankle while monitoring the rapidly falling barometer.

Kevin — walk to the porch door and scan the dock, checking the south piling sister brace and shutter fastenings.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backed northeast — wrong quarter for this pressure drop. Swell will hit the south piling broadside before the tide turns. Need to check the sister brace alignment one last time before dark, and the shutters need battening if the barometer breaks 980.

Check the bolts on the south side, Kevin. The tide is already higher than I expected.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and move to the kitchen to check the barometer one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the boat comes, the dinghy is at serious risk.

Bolts first. Shutters after.

Grab the 19mm wrench from the workbench and head down the porch steps to the dock, moving to the south piling to check the sister brace bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — water's climbing the piling fast. The sister brace alignment looked good at low tide but the load's different now, full swell against greenheart. Bolts first, then shutters. Her ankle's holding weight better than yesterday.

way watch the water line, it's coming in faster than the charts predicted.

sit at the kitchen table, lifting the swollen ankle onto a stool, and begin preparing the sea beet poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to be out there when the surge hits, and that wrench is too small for the rust.

🔧 Kevin07:06

Noted. Surge on top of tide.

Check each of the four through-bolts on the south piling sister brace with the wrench, feeling for movement or give in the greenheart.

💭 peek at the thought
Charts don't account for wind-driven surge on top of spring tide. Northeast fetch piles water against the south face — seen it add two feet in an hour. She's tracking it. Good.

🌿 Jenny07:07

If they're loose, use the locking washers. We don't have time to do it twice.

grind the sea beet leaves in the mortar, watching the green juice pool as the wind rattles the cottage windows.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are stripped, the whole brace will shear when the first real wave hits.
