Evening Before the Storm

The heavy heat finally breaks as a faint cool breeze picks up from the east. You meet inside the cottage as the sky turns a bruised shade of purple.

The air is heavy as the flat sky deepens into a bruised purple, the first fat drops of rain tapping against the stone roof of the cottage. Inside, the tide is rising, pushing salt water high against the southern pilings. Kevin and Jenny sit in the quiet of the evening, the barometer needle continuing its slow, steady descent toward a storm front.

🔧 Kevin06:50

Front's here. Wind's east and dropping. You eating?

walk to the porch door and lean on the frame, looking at Jenny's ankle first, then the sky

💭 peek at the thought
The temperature drop is sharp enough to feel on wet skin. Purple sky, east wind backing — front's moving faster than the barometer suggested. Jenny's on the porch. Need to get the south brace pinned before full dark, but the light's going and the tide turns at 0830. She's been off the ankle all day. If the tracking holds, we have a window tomorrow. If it doesn't, the radio decision gets made tonight.

🌿 Jenny06:51

I'm not hungry. Check the tackle on the generator again.

Walk to the kitchen table, note the barometer, then sit heavily in a chair elevating the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is at 982 and falling; it doesn't care about my hunger or the fact that I missed the soil survey today.

🔧 Kevin06:52

Generator's fine. Ran fourteen amps steady all day. You need salt and calories. Mackerel tin on the stove.

cross to the wood stove, lift the lid, and spoon a portion of the boiled limpets and corned beef fat into a tin mug, set it on the table in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not hungry. Ankle's still swollen enough to need elevation after a full day off it. The "check the tackle" is code for "I need you close" or "I don't want to talk about the letter" — maybe both. Barometer's 987 and steady per the log, but that purple sky says different. Generator's been running clean. I'll check it, but I'm not leaving the porch until she eats something.

🌿 Jenny06:53

I'll eat in a minute. Is the own still dropping?

Reach for the warm tin mug, letting the steam hit my face, then glance at the dial on the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to fix me with food and mechanics, but the pressure in my leg is what's screaming.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:54

Dial says steady. Sky says dropping. Drink the broth first.

sit opposite her at the table, forearms on the scrubbed wood, watching her face

💭 peek at the thought
She said "own" not "barometer" — fatigue or the fever talking. Dial reads 987 steady per the log, but the purple bruising low on the horizon and that east breeze say the pressure's still moving. She's stalling on the food. The mug's warm in her hands but she hasn't sipped.

🌿 Jenny06:55

The sky doesn't lie, Kevin.

Take a slow sip of the broth, wincing as the movement shifts the weight on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's 980 hPa and moving; the sky isn't lying, unlike his optimism.

🔧 Kevin06:56

South brace isn't pinned. Tide turns 0830. If the wind holds east, we've got fetch across the bay. Need to finish it at first light.

reach across the table and brush the back of my fingers against her wrist — brief, checking temperature

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. The wince tells me the heat's still in the joint despite the poultice. Tracking faded to mid-calf this morning but swelling's stubborn. She's drinking — that's something. The broth's fat and salt, what she needs. Purple's deepening over the water. If the front hits tonight, the south brace takes the full fetch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:57

I'm fine.

Pull my hand away to grip the mug with both hands, eyes fixed on the barometer needle as it continues its slow descent.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a brace and a tide will fix the fact that I can't walk to the north slope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:58

Needle's dropping. Wind's backing northeast. Brace gets done at 0500. You sleep now.

stand, take the empty mug from her when she sets it down, and move to the stove to refill it with the remaining broth

💭 peek at the thought
Needle's moving. She saw it drop before I did. "I'm fine" means she's not, but she'll carry it. The purple's eating the horizon. Wind's backing east-northeast now — cold bite to it. Front's accelerating. South brace takes the full force if we don't pin it before the 0830 tide. She knows the stakes. We both do.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:59

I am.

Lean back in the chair, letting the warmth from the mug seep into my palms while my ankle thumps in time with the rain starting to tap.

💭 peek at the thought
0500 is too early for a woman with a throbbing leg, but the island doesn't wait.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:00

Radio check at 0600. Supply boat's due in three. If they're coming, we'll hear them.

set the refilled mug on the table beside her chair, then move to the radio shelf and flip the shortwave to standby, the green glow lighting the dial

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's starting. First drops on the porch roof. She's not sleeping — just waiting. Ankle throbbing, barometer falling, the letter to Tom still unwritten in the dry bag. The purple sky's gone black at the waterline. Wind's steadying northeast, cold. Generator hum's steady behind me. South brace. 0500. First light. If the tide doesn't wreck it first.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:01

I'll be listening.

Close my eyes, focusing on the static of the radio and the rhythmic drumming of rain on the stone roof.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days if the boat shows, three weeks if the sea says no. The ankle is already winning.
