The Storm Breaks Inches

The wind shifts to the north, bringing horizontal rain that finds the leak in the cottage shutter, beginning to drip onto the floor.

The air is heavy and still as the barometer continues to drop to 977 hPa. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and tide pools along the south shore. The dry heat of 28°C is oppressive, and the overcast sky suggests a coming shift in the weather.

🌿 Jenny10:35

The roof is failing again.

Stands up with a wince, clutching her ankle, grabs a bucket to catch the drip near the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Not the seeds. If that water hits the tin, the whole season is gone before I even start.

Got it. Timber strips on the porch. Tarp roll by the generator.

grab the heavy canvas tarp and timber battens from the porch, climb the step ladder to the shutter, batten the tarp over the leak with strips and nails

💭 peek at the thought
Shutter leak's back. Epoxy's gone, spar patch ate the last. Need timber strips and tarp off the porch — batten it before the floor rots.

🌿 Jenny10:37

Be careful with the ladder, the wood is slick.

Moves the bucket out of his way, breathing hard, watching him hammer against the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so fast with the things that don't matter while the rot stays inside.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Holding.

plant the ladder feet on the porch boards, not the stone, lean into the shutter and drive three-inch nails through the batten strips into solid frame, work quick and come down

💭 peek at the thought
Ladder's salt-slick. One wrong move and I'm off it. Jenny's watching — she knows. Drive the nails home fast, don't linger.

🌿 Jenny10:39

Check the tension on the bottom corner. It's going to catch the air.

Wipes the sweat from her forehead and looks down at the seed tin to ensure it's dry.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the dripping stopped for now, but the wind is still screaming.

🔧 Kevin10:39

Adding a low batten.

cut a short timber strip from the offcuts, nail it across the bottom edge of the tarp pulling it drum-tight against the shutter frame, test the tension with a fist

💭 peek at the thought
Bottom corner'll billow if it's loose. Wind'll tear the batten clean off. Need a fourth strip, low, pulled tight.

🌿 Jenny10:41

It'll hold for tonight, maybe.

Leans against the kitchen counter, shifting her weight off the inflamed ankle, watching the tarp ripple in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
It's tighter now, but the pressure is still pushing against the frame.

🔧 Kevin10:41

Running a guy line to the porch post. Backup for the gusts.

tie a length of the new half-inch rope to the tarp's corner grommet, run it down and cleat it off hard on the porch post, snug it so the corner can't lift

💭 peek at the thought
"Maybe" is the word. North wind'll test it by midnight. If the gusts hit thirty, that bottom batten's the weak point. Should run a line from the corner grommet to the porch post — backup.
