← Day 665

the keeper's cottage · day 665 · afternoon

The storm gathers over the island

Kevin and Jenny return to the cottage as the first drops of rain fall. The tide is out, and the wind is picking up.

The rain continues in a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, the air heavy with the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke. Inside, the fire finally catches the driftwood, casting long, flickering orange shadows that dance across the walls as the atmospheric pressure continues to plummet, a silent warning that the approaching storm is moving faster than the forecast predicted.

Kettle's on the stove. I'll get the fire caught.

walk to the wood stove, open the draft, and start laying kindling and small splits from the dry stack

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on warm stone smells like the engine room after a long run — steam and salt and hot metal. She's moving slower than she lets on. The ankle's holding but the calf's tight. I'll get the fire going, make broth, let the stove heat the room before the temperature drops.

🌿 Jenny10:43

Don't use the good wood. We're low.

Sit on the kitchen chair, propping my ankle up on a crate, and open the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain. If I don't find that soil tomorrow, the seeds will just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin10:44

Driftwood pile first. Save the greenheart for the deep cold.

turn to the porch, pull the salt-bleached driftwood armfuls from the stack by the door, and feed them into the firebox one by one

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting. She counts everything now — wood, food, days, seeds. The ankle on the crate tells me more than her voice does. I'll burn the salt-rotten driftwood from the beach pile first. It smokes but it throws heat.

🌿 Jenny10:45

Jenny — take a handful of heirloom seeds from the tin, inspecting them for any dampness or signs of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about the wood. It's about the space. My hands are shaking from the fever.

🔧 Kevin10:46

Kevin — add two larger driftwood splits to the catching fire, close the stove door, and set the kettle on the hot plate to heat

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Dry. The newspaper wrapping held. She's got the touch for it — gentle, methodical. The tin's rusted through on the sides but the lid seal held. That's something.

🌿 Jenny10:47

Check the tank later.

Place the seeds back in the tin, clicking the lid shut, and set it on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is full, but I'm empty. way own feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

🔧 Kevin10:48

Overflow's copper. Shims are oak. Epoxy cured three days. It'll hold.

pull a tin mug from the shelf, scoop coffee into it from the jar, and wait for the kettle to steam

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full. 400 litres. She knows. She's reminding me to look at the overflow repair we did — the copper spillway, the oak shims, the epoxy. First real rain since. She wants to know it holds.

🌿 Jenny10:49

I need to see the ridge tomorrow.

Reach down to unwrap the bandage from my swollen ankle, wincing as the fabric sticks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the tank, and I'm thinking about the dirt. The morphology is out there.
