Pre-storm tension

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the cloud cover thickens over the island. Jenny checks the barometer reading while Kevin watches the wind pick up across the bay.

Kevin dug up the buried antibiotic cache from the generator shed and found a full course of doxycycline and metronidazole. Jenny inspected the garden wall and found new hairline cracks in the mortar along the seaward face, with salt crystals forming in the joints. The tide remained low and the barometer continued to rise.

🌿 Jenny11:17

The wind is turning north. We should check the garden wall again later.

Jenny reaches for her sketchbook and begins a quick, precise sketch of the cloud formations over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding, but the air is heavy. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by a hot iron.

Wall held through the night. South brace didn't move. I'll walk the dock at first light while the tide's still out — check the mooring ring and the new shims on the north piling.

sip from the tin mug, eyes on the treeline where the wind shows in the spruce tops

💭 peek at the thought
North wind means the swell shifts to the south face of the dock. The sister brace held last night, but the tide's still low and the wind's just turning. Need to walk the dock at first light before the water comes up. She's sketching clouds — good, keeps her off the ankle. The barometer's still rising but slow. If it stalls below 980, the south piling takes the full fetch.

🌿 Jenny11:23

Watch for salt rot. I'm going to the north slope today, I need to see that erosion for myself.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as she shifts weight to her good leg, and grabs her walking stick.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the wood and the stone, the things that don't grow.

🔧 Kevin11:24

North slope can wait. Your ankle's tracking red past the wrap. I'm retrieving the antibiotic cache from the generator shed — you're starting the full course today.

set the mug down on the porch rail, push up from the step, and head toward the generator shed behind the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's not ready for the north slope. The ankle's hot to the touch above the wrap, and she's favoring it hard. The erosion's been there for months — it'll wait. But she won't hear me say no, not today. The antibiotics are in the generator shed, buried under the old fuel drums. Four days of doxycycline left, maybe five of metronidazole if the blister pack wasn't compromised by damp. Need to get them started before noon.

🌿 Jenny11:27

I'll check the garden wall while you're gone. Just watch the wind.

Jenny moves to the edge of the porch, tracing the line of the half-weeded garden with a critical eye.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix this with a bottle and a bandage. The soil is moving, though.

🔧 Kevin11:27

Back before the tide turns.

walk around the cottage to the generator shed, pull the crowbar from the loop on the door, and lever the swollen door open

💭 peek at the thought
She'll check the wall from the porch and call it done. The ankle won't let her walk the beds, not with that wince. The generator shed door sticks in the damp — need the crowbar. The cache is buried under the southeast corner, marked by the rusted spike I drove last winter. Four tins of doxycycline, three of metronidazole, sealed in the ammo can with the desiccant packs. If the seals held, she gets fourteen days. If not, we're down to what's in the med kit: four doses doxy, five metronidazole. Not enough for a proper course.

🌿 Jenny11:29

Don't be too long. The clouds are dropping fast.

Jenny kneels by the garden wall, running a hand over the mortar to feel for new cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
The shed always smells of old oil and salt. I hope the humidity kept them dry.

🔧 Kevin11:29

Kevin — step inside the shed, pick up the entrenching tool from the corner, and start digging at the southeast post where the rusted spike marks the spot

💭 peek at the thought
Clouds dropping means rain within the hour. The shed floor is dirt — dig with the entrenching tool by the wall. Spike's driven into the corner post, head bent west. Two feet down, the ammo can sits in a plastic bag. If the bag's intact, the pills are dry. If not, we improvise. Jenny's on the wall mortar; she'll find the hairline crack at the third course from the east corner. Salt works slow. The wall's held three winters. It'll hold a fourth if I re-point before the equinox.
