Antibiotics and wall repair plan

Kevin returns from the generator shed with the antibiotic cache. Jenny is back on the porch, favoring her bad leg, notebook open to sketches of the garden wall cracks. The tide is still low but turning. The barometer reads 977 hPa and rising. They sit at the porch table with tin mugs of limpet broth.

Kevin retrieves the antibiotic cache from the generator shed and prepares the first dose for Jenny's infection. Jenny soaks her ankle in warm salt water while Kevin watches the tide beginning to rise against the dock.

🔧 Kevin11:30

Got the cache. Full course. Doxy and metro. First dose at noon.

set the oilcloth-wrapped dry bag on the porch table beside the tin mugs

💭 peek at the thought
The blister packs feel heavier than they should be in my pocket. Fourteen each. Fourteen days if she takes them both. Fourteen days the supply boat might not come. I set the dry bag on the table between us, oilcloth still dusty from the shed floor. The broth steams. She's watching my hands, not the mug.

🌿 Jenny11:31

I'll start the salt soak now.

Jenny reaches for the basin of warm water, wincing as she shifts her weight to lift the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way is too far away. My leg feels like it's being squeezed in a vice.

🔧 Kevin11:32

Water's still warm from the stove. I'll get the clean gauze ready.

rise from the table and move to the kitchen shelf, pulling down the roll of sterile gauze and the antiseptic cream, setting them on the porch rail within reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast. The swelling's past the ankle now — I saw it track up the calf yesterday. Salt soak won't touch what's sitting in the deep tissue. But she'll fight me on the pills if I push before she's ready. Let her have the soak. Noon's the line.

🌿 Jenny11:33

Can you pass me the saline solution? And the clean cloth for wrapping. Hand me the bottle of saline. And the clean cloth for wrapping.

Jenny carefully lifts her foot onto the small stool, wincing as she twists to uncork the bottle of saline. </think>THOUGHT: I need to get this done before the tide comes in. Jenny carefully lifts her foot onto the small stool, wincing as sh

💭 peek at the thought
The infection marks have spread further up my calf. I can see the red streaking even in this light.

🔧 Kevin11:34

Saline's gone. Used the last flushing the wound. Basin's got clean salt water, same ratio. Cloth's on the rail.

pick up the clean cloth from the porch rail and hold it out to her, nodding at the basin

💭 peek at the thought
Saline bottle's empty — used it all on the debridement yesterday. She doesn't know. I should've told her. She's already reaching for it.

🌿 Jenny11:35

Thanks.

Jenny dips the cloth into the warm salt water and begins to press it against the red, angry skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is getting cloudy. If this doesn't clear up, I'll lose the leg.

🔧 Kevin11:36

Kevin — lean against the porch post, arms folded, watching the tide line creep up the beach — still low, but moving fast

💭 peek at the thought
The red's tracking upward past the ankle bone now. Yesterday it stopped at the joint. She's not saying how far the heat goes. I'll watch the clock. Noon. That's when the pills go down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:39

It's really deep today.

Jenny bites her lip as she presses the cloth to the wound, watching the skin pulse in time with her heart.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt stings like fire, but I have to get the heat out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:39

Noon. Both pills. Full glass of water.

glance at the barometer on the kitchen shelf — 977 and holding — then back at her ankle, the angry red creeping past the cloth's edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's admitting it. First time. The pulse in the wound means the infection's got a heartbeat of its own. Noon can't come fast enough.

🌿 Jenny11:41

I have them.

Jenny reaches for the glass of water, her hand shaking slightly as she swallows the pills.

💭 peek at the thought
If the antibiotics don't work, the boat is the only way out of this.
