Afternoon Lull

The heat begins to dip as the overcast clouds thicken, and the tide finally begins its slow turn.

Kevin and Jenny struggled to secure the cottage as a heavy rain squall moved from the west. Kevin failed to properly latch the shutters, resulting in a persistent leak, while Jenny prioritized checking the seed tins despite the rising wind.

🌿 Jenny13:39

The wind is shifting, Kevin. Get the storm shutters tight.

stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, to wrap it in a clean cloth and head toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is rising, but the air feels heavy—I need to check the water tank before the rain truly hits.

Shutters first. Then dock at low tide.

Walk to the east shutter, check the through-bolts and greenheart sister plank alignment, tighten the nyloc nuts with the 19mm wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting northeast with the tide turn — swell will push hard against the dock face. Shutters first, then the dock at low water. Her ankle's holding but the wince tells me it's not right yet.

🌿 Jenny13:41

Just make sure the latch actually catches. I'm checking the tank level.

sit at the kitchen table, debride the ankle wrap, and apply a fresh mint poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware while the soil is literally washing away up there.

🔧 Kevin13:42

Latch needs a tap. I'll sort it.

Tap the shutter latch with the heel of my palm, test the catch, then work the bolt back and forth until it seats clean. Wipe salt crust from the mechanism with a rag.

💭 peek at the thought
Latch has been sticky since the last blow — salt in the mechanism. Tank's full but she's checking anyway. Good habit. Her hands know the poultice routine better than mine.

🌿 Jenny13:43

Check it twice. The pressure is dropping faster than I thought.

lean back, rubbing the throbbing in my ankle, and watch the sky turn a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
If that latch doesn't hold, the rain will get into the kitchen, and I don't have the energy to way floor again.

🔧 Kevin13:44

Checking both shutters now. Then dock bolts.

Move to the west shutter, test its latch, tighten the hinge bolts with the 19mm wrench. Walk the porch perimeter checking all batten strips on the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 980 and steady an hour ago. If she's reading a drop that fast, the front's accelerating. Shutters, dock, generator lashings — sequence matters. She's watching the sky not the gauge. Trust her eyes.

🌿 Jenny13:45

The wind is picking up. Get the seed tin inside before it starts.

stand, limping to the bedroom, and pull the rusted tin from under the bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the bolts, but the north slope is what's actually failing.

🔧 Kevin13:46

I'll take it. You sit.

Take the tin from her hands, carry it to the kitchen table, set it down gentle. Return to the porch and check the generator storm lashings are tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's heavy and the stairs are slick. She's moving on a bad ankle because she doesn't trust me to handle the seeds. Or she doesn't trust the storm to wait. Either way — tin comes in, she stays off the leg.
