The Rising Swell

The water reaches the edge of the dock planks, and the air remains thick with the scent of salt.

Kevin spends the midday checking the dock and the cottage shutter while the tide remains high against the shore. Jenny stays at the cottage, managing her ankle pain and monitoring the barometer as the pressure holds its rise.

🌿 Jenny13:33

The water is higher than the chart said, Kevin. Check the bolts on the moorings.

Jenny stands slowly, wincing as her ankle throbs, and walks toward the porch to inspect the water line.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in fast today; if that tank leaks, I'll lose everything before the boat arrives.

On it.

walk to the dock and inspect the mooring ring bolts at the northeast corner, testing each for movement with the wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tide's running ahead of the tables — means the swell's pushing in harder than predicted. The mooring ring held last time but the mortise took a beating. Need to check the through-bolts before the full weight comes on.

🌿 Jenny13:35

Watch for the corrosion on the threads; the salt eats everything fast this year.

Jenny leans against the way post, squinting through the overcast as she watches the water climb the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are rusted, the whole dock will take the dinghy when the swell hits.

Threads look clean on the two I put in last month. The old one though —

crouch at the northeast corner, running fingers along the exposed bolt threads, checking for pitting and testing each nut with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The stainless shows pitting already. If a thread strips now, the ring pulls free and the dinghy goes with the tide. Better to catch it while the water's still low enough to see.

🌿 Jenny13:37

Replace it now. Don't wait for the wayhy to pull the ring out.

Jenny shifts her weight, a sharp pain shooting through her ankle, and turns back to face the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the old hardware. The metal is probably compromised from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin13:39

Got a spare staged. Be right back.

walk to the east shutter, retrieve the 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut, return to the dock, and replace the old corroded bolt at the mooring ring mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The old bolt's the weak link. Got one 150mm stainless through-bolt left with washers and nyloc — staged at the east shutter. Swap it now while the ring's still unloaded. Takes ten minutes. Then the dock's solid for whatever comes.
