← Day 669

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Approaching Squall

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is on the north cliffs.

Kevin adjusted the dinghy's bow line and called a radio check on the shortwave, receiving only a news fragment and the barometer reading. Jenny sketched the cloud formation over the north cliffs before starting her descent back toward the cottage.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You check the tension on the new ropes to ensure the dinghy stays clear of the rising tide.

🔧 Kevin14:39

Kevin — walk to the dinghy, check bow line tension, pay out two feet of warp and re-cleat with a rolling hitch. Verify stern spring takes the load clean.

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's pushing harder than the barometer suggests. Bow line's singing — need more slack before the spring tide peaks.

🔧 Kevin14:42

Kevin — walk back up the dock to the cottage porch. Pick up the shortwave handset. Tap the mic twice. "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Kilo Victor Zero. Radio check. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are holding. Tide's still coming. Radio's been quiet all morning — no Trust check-in, no supply boat ETA. Should've heard something by now.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You watch the darkening horizon, noting the first signs of a heavy downpour front.

🌿 Jenny14:37

Not today, you big grey bastard.

pull the notebook from my pocket and make a quick, jagged sketch of the cloud formation over the cliff edge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that wind turns before the boat is out, the north slope will be a mess.

🌿 Jenny14:41

Jenny — wipe the pencil lead off my thumb and begin the slow descent back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide; I need to get back before the path gets too slick.
