Evening preparations

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as the sun dips. The air pressure continues its slow rise.

Kevin and Jenny gather at the old shrine as the sky thickens over the 31°C heat. The tide is receding, exposing more of the rocky shoreline, while the rising pressure suggests a shift in the weather is coming before the supply boat arrives in three days.

🔧 Kevin16:34

Engine held. No shake at load.

walk up the porch steps and set the wrench down on the table, then pour water from the kettle into a tin mug

💭 peek at the thought
The engine ran clean. No vibration through the hull at any RPM. That's done. Now the light's going and the barometer's still climbing — 985 and rising. She's on the porch. Ankle's wrapped. She's been sitting with it all day. I should check the shutters before full dark, but first I'll see how she is.

🌿 Jenny16:35

Good. Did you tighten the bolts?

lean against the doorframe, rubbing my throbbing ankle while looking out at the thickening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing isn't falling apart, even if the rest of us are.

🔧 Kevin16:36

Yesterday. 35 newton-metres. All four.

lean the wrench against the table leg and sit on the bottom step, boots still dusty from the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the engine mount bolts. I torqued them yesterday after the sleeve went on. Held at 35Nm. She knows the work — she's checking I didn't skip it in the heat.

🌿 Jenny16:37

Don't get cocky. The humidity is going to ruin the mortar anyway.

sink into a chair and sigh, reaching for the tin of seeds in my pocket without looking.

💭 peek at the thought
He's getting better at the torque, but I'm getting worse at hiding the pain.

🔧 Kevin16:38

Mortar's sacrificial. Buys the planks another season.

pull the rusted poppy tin from my coat pocket and set it on the table between us, lid still sealed

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the mortar. Lime doesn't cure in this wet heat — it just stays soft until the next tide chews it out. I knew that when I mixed it. Did it anyway because the dock can't wait. The tin in my pocket is the poppy seed one, rusted through at the sides. She's reaching for it like it's a habit.

🌿 Jenny16:39

Seasons don't matter if the soil is dead.

run a thumb over the cold metal of the tin, feeling the weight of grandmother's seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always about the wood and the stone, never the life underneath them.

🔧 Kevin16:41

Soil's not dead. pH's up. Beet's taking.

pull out the other tin — the heirloom one, dented but sound — and set it beside the poppy tin, then reach for the kettle to top up the mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. The poppy tin — grandmother's — has one viable seed left. One. She knows that. I know that. The soil isn't dead though. The sea beet grows. The purslane. The mustard. We've got lime down, pH coming up. She's tired and the ankle's bad and the clouds are thick. I won't argue the soil.

🌿 Jenny16:41

The beet is a survivor, Kevin. The north ridge is still shifting.

look at the rusted tin, then out at the overgrown garden I promised to build.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees the salt levels, I see the erosion. We're speaking different languages.
