Evening Watch before the Storm

The pair prepares the cottage shelter for the approaching weather front as the barometer continues its slow climb.

The warm rain continues in a steady drizzle, drumming against the thatched roof of the old shrine. The tide has retreated to its lowest point, exposing the slick rocks and tide pools of the northern shore. The air is heavy with salt and damp earth, though the barometer shows a slow rise as the immediate storm front stalls.

Check the shutters again, Kevin. The wind is shifting to the east.

Trace the edge of grandmother's tin with my thumb, feeling the potential weight of the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity stays this high, the mortar on the north ridge wall will never set properly.

On it. South shutters first, then the dock.

Walk to the cottage and start checking the south-facing shutters, testing each bolt and hinge for play.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing east. That means the swell will wrap around the south point and hit the dock broadside. Shutters first, then the dock lines — she knows the sequence as well as I do.

🌿 Jenny16:45

Don't forget the sealant on the ridge stones; the rain is coming in hard tonight.

Squat by the weathered stones and sketch the way the water is pooling in the carved names.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wood he doesn't see the salt eating the stone.

Sealant's in the workshop. Dock's at low tide now — I'll hit the lines and the sister brace, then come back up with the tub.

Walk down the ridge path toward the dock, checking the mooring ring and south piling sister brace as the tide pulls away.

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge stones at the shrine. She's thinking ahead — water in the carvings freezes, expands, splits the stone. But the sealant's in the workshop, and the tide's still dropping. Dock first, then back up the hill.

🌿 Jenny16:47

The pressure is dropping again. Don't stay out too long in the dark.

Wipe the moisture off my notebook pages, trying to save the sketch of the soil stability.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the island while the island is just... being there.

Thirty minutes. Low tide's the window. Back before full dark.

Work the come-along on the south dock mooring line, taking up slack against the piling while the water's down, then check the sister brace bolts for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure dropping again after climbing all afternoon. That's not a normal frontal passage — could be a secondary low wrapping around. She's right about the dark; the path back up the ridge gets treacherous wet. But the dock lines need tensioning at low water or they'll snap when the swell hits high tide.
