The Rising Humidity

Kevin and Jenny stand near the edge of the ridge as the wind picks up from the overcast sky. Jenny checks the barometer again while Kevin watches the drainage channels for signs of the coming downpour.

The air is heavy and humid, though the barometer shows a slight rise in pressure. Kevin is busy working on the north ridge drainage channel, clearing stones and setting the grade to direct water past the tamarind trunk. Jenny observes the erosion patterns from above, sketching the boundary between stable soil and silt while managing the pain in her ankle.

🌿 Jenny16:53

The pressure is dropping faster than I thought. We need to clear the channel by the tamarind before the storm hits.

Kneels on one leg to sketch the erosion pattern in the mud, ignoring the sharp throb in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too saturated; if it rains now, the whole north slope will slide before I can get the seeds in the ground.

🔧 Kevin16:55

I'll clear it. You log the pattern from up here.

walk toward the tamarind trunk at the north slope drainage channel

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. The barometer's been falling steady since dawn. That tamarind channel's the only thing keeping the north slope from sliding onto the dock — if it chokes, we lose the piling reinforcement we just did. My ankle's fine. Hers isn't. She shouldn't be kneeling.

🌿 Jenny16:55

Be careful with the stones near the bank, they're loose than they look.

Presses the pencil to the paper, marking the exact line where the stable soil ends and the silt begins.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's helping, but he doesn't see the way the water is already undermining the root.

🔧 Kevin16:56

Noted.

crouch at the channel edge and begin pulling loose stones from the drainage path, stacking them to the side for reuse

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it like we'll have time to reference it later. Smart. The stones she means are the ones I dry-stacked last month — no mortar, just friction and hope. They'll move if I'm not careful.

🌿 Jenny16:57

Don't just stack them, we need to check the angle or the water will just pool.

Shifts her weight onto her good leg, wincing silently as she watches the widening cracks in the earth.

💭 peek at the thought
If he moves those flat ones, the whole shelf will collapse during the first heavy rain.

🔧 Kevin16:58

Level's in the shed. Back in a minute.

walk back to the cottage shed, retrieve the small torpedo level, return to the tamarind channel

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Stacking's lazy. The channel needs grade — half a bubble on the level over three meters, same as the dock footer. I'll reset them proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:59

Hurry, the sky is turning a color I don't like.

Wipes a smear of mud off the notebook cover, her hand trembling slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's using the tools now, but a level won't stop a landslide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:00

Working.

set the level on the first reset stone, adjust the trench bed with the trowel until the bubble centers, then drive the stone home with the mallet; repeat down the channel

💭 peek at the thought
The tremor's not the cold. She's been running on adrenaline and antibiotic fumes for two days. The sky's gone that bruised purple-green I've only seen before bad ones in the Biscay. No time for perfect. Functional grade, key the stones, move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:01

If we don't get the water past the tamarind, the whole ridge goes down.

Sketches the depth of the new channel in the margin, noting the slope's incline.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually getting the grade right, but the soil is too weak to hold it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:03

Three minutes.

continue resetting stones with the level, tamping each into the trench bed, checking grade every meter, moving fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's recording the as-built. Good. Means she expects us to be here after to need it. The tamarind's roots are the only rebar this slope has — if the water undercuts them, the ridge follows. Five meters of channel left. Rain's close enough to smell now.
