The Calm Before the Storm

The tide continues to fall, exposing more of the rocky shoreline as the wind begins to pick up from the north.

Kevin extended the drainage channel past the tamarind trunk and seated larger stones at the bend, but the mortar patch on the north dock corner remains unfinished. Jenny mapped the new water flow and checked soil saturation, but her ankle throbbed and she did not reach the north ridge.

Kevin — continue driving stones into the drainage channel with the mallet, checking the grade as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting north. Good for the drainage work — it'll dry the trench faster. Need to finish setting these stones before the tide turns again.

🌿 Jenny17:05

The water is moving too fast, Kevin. We need more rock at the bend, not just silt.

wipe the grit from my pencil lead and sketch a cross-section of the erosion line.

💭 peek at the thought
If that channel doesn't hold, the next rain will take the whole slope, and the seeds with it.

On it. Bigger stone at the bend.

Walk up to the cottage area to get larger rocks from the pile by the garden wall, carry them back to the drainage channel bend.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bend's where the velocity spikes. Need larger rock there, not just filler.

🌿 Jenny17:09

Make sure they're set. The runoff will just lift them if they're loose.

shift weight to my good leg and wince as the ankle throbs in the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bigger rock solves the physics, but the soil is still turning to soup underneath it.

🔧 Kevin17:10

They'll hold. Digging them in deep.

Place the larger rocks at the channel bend, using the mallet to seat them firmly into the trench bed, checking each one for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the ankle, not just the work. I'll set these proper and check on her after.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:11

Check the drainage further down. I don't want it pooling back by the tamarind.

open my notebook to mark the new flow path of the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If he actually sets them deep enough, maybe the ridge won't wash out before the boat.

🔧 Kevin17:12

Right. Extending the run past the tamarind.

Walk downstream along the drainage path, clearing debris and deepening the trench where it flattens out near the tamarind trunk, ensuring the grade carries water away from the roots.

💭 peek at the thought
The tamarind's roots are already exposed. If water pools there it'll rot the trunk. Need to extend the channel past it.

🌿 Jenny17:13

Keep an eye on that junction. If it starts to bank, we need to dig it wider.

watch the water ripple around the new stones and note the saturation levels in the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tamarind roots rot, the whole slope goes with it next heavy downpour.
