Evening by the fire

Rain drums on the cottage roof. The fire burns low and steady. Kevin sits at the table with the Yanmar log and a tin mug of limpet broth. Jenny rests on the settee, ankle propped, sketchbook open. The wind moans over the ridge. Outside, the jellyfish bloom drifts past the dock pilings, ghostly in the gathering dark.

Kevin checked the tide line on the dock pilings and noted the rising barometer, while Jenny sketched the rain-carved gullies by firelight. The supply boat's arrival in two days loomed over their quiet evening as rain hammered the roof.

🌿 Jenny17:41

The tide is too high for the dock, Kevin. If the boat comes, it won't land. Just stay inside tonight.

Jenny picks up her charcoal pencil and begins to sketch the way the smoke catches the fire light, her movements slow and precise despite the throb in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. This rain isn't stopping before the way boat arrives, and my ankle is throbbing like a second heart. I need to check the drainage on the north ridge tomorrow, but I can't even stand without the cane now. Grandmother's seeds are still in that tin, safe and dry, while I sit here rotting in the damp.

Boat won't come in this swell. Not with the barometer falling." I tap the log book. "Vibration's at the prop shaft bearing. Check it at slack tide tomorrow.

stir the broth and set the mug on the table beside her sketchbook, then pull the blanket up over her legs where it's slipped

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide — spring swell on a falling barometer means the boat won't risk the dock tonight even if it shows. The Yanmar log shows the vibration spike at 1800 RPM; I'll need to check the prop shaft bearing at slack water tomorrow. For now, the fire's holding and she's drawing. That's enough.

🌿 Jenny17:45

I'll look at the bearing if I can get off this own. Right now, I just want the rain to stop for five minutes. neverDO: Jenny reaches for the mug, wrapping her cold fingers around the warmth, and turns back to her sketch, focusing on the way the rain is carving gullies in the mud outside the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always talking about the engine or the boat, while the island is literally dissolving under our feet. The vibration in the<strong> doesn't matter if the north ridge slides into the sea. I'm tired. I'm so tired of being the only one watching the way the salt is eating everything.

You draw. I'll check the bearing at slack water.

pull the notebook closer and mark the RPM range where the vibration peaks, then set the pen down and listen to the rain on the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She won't be getting off this couch tomorrow either, not with that ankle tracking toward her knee. The bearing's my job. Always was.

🌿 Jenny17:47

Just make sure the mortar is dry next time. The tide is coming in anyway.

Jenny shifts her weight, wincing as a sharp spike of pain shoots through her ankle, and presses the charcoal harder against the paper to shade the roots of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bearing fix is the whole world. He doesn't see the cracks in the soil or the way the tamarind bark is turning grey. I'm exhausted from being the only one who notices the end.

🔧 Kevin17:47

Epoxy next time. Mortar won't set in this humidity.

reach across the table and gently straighten the blanket where it's bunched at her shin, then pick up my mug and drink the last of the broth

💭 peek at the thought
The mortar wasn't the tide. It was the humidity — 90% and rising, warm rain on cold stone. Quick-set epoxy or nothing. I know that now.

🌿 Jenny17:55

way or not, the ground is still shifting.

Jenny looks up from her sketch, her jaw set tight, as she watches the shadow of the firelight dance across the whitewashed stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of his fixes, like epoxy can hold the whole island together. He doesn't see the way the ridge is thinning out. I'm so tired of explaining that the earth is moving.

🔧 Kevin17:55

The ground's always shifting. That's why we brace it.

set the empty mug down hard enough to ring on the table, then stand and walk to the porch door to check the tide line on the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. She's talking about us — the silence between Tom and me, the garden I never built, the life we said we'd make here. The ground shifting under both of us.
