Rising Swell and Gathering Clouds

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the tide continues to cover the wood and the wind begins to pick.

Kevin secured the dinghy with three lines against the rising swell, then followed Jenny up the slick dock to the cottage. Jenny limped inside as the wind shifted north and rain began to fall, closing the door behind them. Kevin lit a fire in the stove while the tide surged against the pilings.

🌿 Jenny17:27

The tide is too high for those planks, Kevin. We need to secure the dinghy before the swell hits.

Jenny shifts her weight to her good leg, wincing as the salt spray stings her ankle, and watches the horizon for the first flash of rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for this heat, and he's still staring at the wood while the sky is turning.

Aye. Bow line first — give it slack for the rise. Then double the stern spring.

Walk to the dinghy, untie the bow line, pay out two metres of slack, and cleat it off loose; then take the spare warp, run a second stern spring from the dinghy's aft cleat around the north piling and back, tension it, and make fast.

💭 peek at the thought
The mortar patch is useless now — salt water's already working under it. Need to get the dinghy doubled up and the bow line slacked for the swell before the wind shifts hard. She's right about the tide.

🌿 Jenny17:29

If that spring doesn't hold, the surge is going to take the whole mathhy out.

Jenny leans against the rotting timber of the dock, her own throbbing in time with the tide, and sketches the way the water is churning the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the knots he doesn't see the clouds are the color of a bruised plum.

🔧 Kevin17:33

The piling's soft. Spring'll hold the boat, might pull the piling. Need a breast line to the south cleat — spreads the load.

Grab the remaining half-inch rope, run a breast line from the dinghy's midships cleat to the south dock cleat, tension it hard, and cleat it off; check all three lines for chafe points.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The north piling's got rot at the waterline. If the spring shocks it, the whole finger goes. Should've sistered it last week.

🌿 Jenny17:35

It's tight for now, but the wind is shifting from the north and we should get inside.

Jenny wipes the salt from her eyes, wincing as she shifts her weight again, and watches the first heavy drops of rain hit the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the load, but the wood is too rotten to trust much longer anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:35

Go. I'll grab the ditch bag and the radio log, meet you at the cottage.

Cast off the breast line and coil it on the dinghy; grab the ditch bag lashed to the forward eye and the notebook from the dry bag; walk up the dock to the cottage path.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Wind'll back west by dark and build. Dock work's done for today. She's favouring that ankle hard — the poultice needs changing and she needs to be off it.

🌿 Jenny17:37

Don't take too long, the dock is getting slick.

Jenny limps toward the cottage, her hand pressed against the railing for balance, and watches the dinghy bob in the rising swell.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming down hard now, and my ankle is screaming with every step.

🔧 Kevin17:37

Right behind you.

Follow her up the dock path, one hand on the rail, boots testing each plank before committing weight; reach the cottage porch and step inside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The ankle's worse than she's saying. Dock planks are grease with this rain — one wrong step and she's in the water. Need to be right behind her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:39

Close the door. The wind is picking up over the ridge.

Jenny leans against the door, letting out a long, shaky breath, and begins to unlace her throbbing ankle brace.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The air inside is still, but I can feel the humidity settling in my bones.

🔧 Kevin17:39

Kevin — shoulder the door shut, throw the bolt, and latch the hook; cross to the stove, open the damper, and lay kindling and a split log on the embers from this morning; strike a match and get it going.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's warped at the bottom — needs a shoulder to latch in this wind. She's shaking. Cold, pain, or both. First get the door, then the fire, then look at that ankle.
