The First Drops

The first heavy drops of rain hit the roof just as you both step inside. The wind howls through the radio mast.

Kevin works at the dock, preparing a mixture of freshwater and washed sand to repair the corner mortar as the tide rises. Jenny stays at the cottage, checking the shortwave radio aerial for any signs of the approaching supply boat or changes in the weather.

🌿 Jenny21:25

Close the door, Kevin. Now.

sit at the kitchen table and rub my swollen ankle while watching the rain blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is going to wash away before I even get the seeds out. My leg is on fire.

🔧 Kevin21:25

Aye.

pull the door shut hard, throw the bolt, then grab the oilskin from the hook and head back out to check the generator lashings before the swell hits the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer said. Door's still open, wind'll tear the porch boards if I don't move.

🌿 Jenny21:27

You're an idiot! The tide is already turning!

open the notebook and start sketching the soil profile from the test pit, my hands shaking.

💭 peek at the thought
Who's going back out in that? He's going to get way off the island for a generator.

🔧 Kevin21:29

Dock first. Generator's lashed.

turn back from the shed, stride for the dock with the crowbar and mortar bucket already staged there, eyes on the northeast corner where the joint failed

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's turning, wind's rising, and I'm halfway to the generator shed like a fool. The dock takes priority — if the corner mortar fails on a rising tide with this wind, the whole finger pier goes.

🌿 Jenny21:29

way don't get swept into the current!

watch him disappear through the grey, then press the pencil to the paper to capture the sediment layers.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, we're stuck here until the boat that doesn't come. The acidity waits.

🔧 Kevin21:30

(shouted back over the wind) Twenty minutes! Got freshwater sand in the bucket!

reach the dock, drop to knees on the planking, scrape out the failed joint with the crowbar's edge while the first real wave slams the pilings and spray hits my back

💭 peek at the thought
She's shouting into wind. The dock's thirty yards but the path's slick and the swell's already climbing the pilings. Northeast corner's the weak point — salt in the last mortar batch, I knew it when I trowelled it. Got maybe twenty minutes before high tide puts water over the repair.

🌿 Jenny21:31

What about the soil? What about the soil?

glance toward the windows as another wave crashes, then mark the notebook page with a quick sketch of what I saw before the rain hit. </think>THOUGHT: The sea beet poultice on my ankle is useless if the whole place is underwater. glance tow

💭 peek at the thought
The sea beet poultice on my ankle is useless if the whole place is underwater.

🔧 Kevin21:34

(bellowed over a breaking wave) Lime's on the beds! Rain'll take it down! Dock goes first!

mix fresh mortar in the bucket with the washed sand and freshwater haul, trowel it deep into the cleaned joint, pack it hard with the crowbar's flat — hands moving fast, the tide lapping the planks beside me

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the north slope soil while I'm knee-deep in dock repair. The lime's spread but not worked in — rain'll help wash it down, but this much this fast'll just run off. Soil's the least of it if the dock goes.
