The Squall Arrives

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust, and the wind now howls through the spruce trees.

Kevin worked to secure the garden beds by driving stakes and checking before the clouds broke. Jenny sampled the soil on the north slope to track the acidity levels before the coming rain. The sky darkened as they finished their tasks and retreated to the cottage.

Front moved up. Dock corner first — then the shade cloth anchors.

walk to the dock with trowel and mortar bucket

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here early. Barometer was rising at midday — shouldn't drop this fast. Need the dock mortar done before the surge hits the north piling. Jenny's on the tarp; I'll secure the garden side and get to the dock.

The soil is already turning slick, Kevin! secure the stakes before you go!

lean my weight against the rough stone wall, gripping the edge of the canvas to keep it from lashing.

💭 peek at the thought
If he leaves the garden now, the wind will strip the topsoil right off, and I can't reach the ridge alone.

🔧 Kevin21:18

Doing both. Garden stakes first.

drive two oak stakes at the windward garden corners, then jog to the dock with mortar bucket and trowel

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — stakes pull first in wet ground. But the dock mortar needs slack tide and we've got maybe forty minutes before the surge builds. I'll stake the garden edge on the way past.

🌿 Jenny21:19

Just make sure they're deep! The salt is going to ruin everything!

wipe the rain from my eyes and wince as a sharp spike of pain shoots through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening, but the wind is picking up too fast for me to even hold the notebook.

🔧 Kevin21:20

Freshwater barrels are by the porch. Stakes going in deep.

drive the remaining two oak stakes at the leeward garden corners, hammering them flush, then sprint to the dock with mortar bucket and trowel

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's already in the mortar from last time — that's why it failed. Freshwater haul's in the barrels by the cottage. Stakes need to be deep, she's right. Ankle's slowing her; I'll double the garden stakes and get to the dock.

🌿 Jenny21:21

way up! The sky is turning a color I don't like!

clutch my ankle, watching the wind fight against the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If those aren't deep enough, the north ridge runoff will take grandmother's seeds before the week is.

🔧 Kevin21:22

Head inside. Door shut. I've got the dock.

mix mortar with freshwater from the haul barrel, pack the failed dock corner joint deep, tool it smooth before the rain hits hard

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's going bruised purple at the horizon — that's the front wall. Dock corner's exposed to the full fetch. Mortar won't set in driving rain but the joint needs filling before the surge pounds it loose. Work fast.

🌿 Jenny21:23

Don't let the water in! The garden is already drowning!

limp toward the cottage, keeping my weight off the swollen ankle as the sky finally breaks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, if the squall takes the roof off the cottage the seeds are lost anyway.
