The Ridge at Nightfall

Kevin and Jenny meet at the stone circle on the ridge as the wind howls and the first heavy drops of rain fall.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the stone of the old shrine. The air is thick with the scent of wet earth and decaying vegetation. Kevin and Jenny stand at the edge of the north ridge, watching the water seep through the widening cracks in the soil that threaten the shelf where the shrine sits.

You shouldn't have climbed in this.

stand still against the wind, hands in jacket pockets, watching her face in the failing light

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's come on fast. She made it up here on that ankle — stubborn as ever. The stones are older than anything we've built. Names worn smooth. I carved one myself, weeks back. Didn't tell her.

🌿 Jenny01:52

The soil is shifting, Kevin. I needed to see where the tension cracks are.

Jenny shifts her weight to her good leg, flinching as her ankle throbs, and grips her waterproof notebook tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile, but the ridge is the only place that isn't moving under right now.

Show me.

step closer, shoulder blocking the worst of the wind off her, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The cracks run two metres back from the spring line. I saw them yesterday. She walked this ridge in forty-knot wind alone. Wrote it down. Didn't tell me.

🌿 Jenny01:55

Look at the way the water is pooling by the stones—the drainage is completely gone here.

way opens the notebook to a detailed sketch of the ridge's profile, pointing to a specific line of erosion with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't find a stable spot now, grandmother's seeds will just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin01:55

North slope's the same. Cracks running parallel to the spring line. Soil's holding for now.

lean over the notebook, finger tracing her erosion line, the other hand braced on a weathered stone

💭 peek at the thought
The sketch is precise. Elevation marks. Water paths. She's been measuring this for weeks. The pooling's new — last storm didn't do that. Ground's saturated deeper than I thought.

🌿 Jenny01:57

It won't hold the next storm. If the rain keeps up, the whole shelf will slide into the sea.

Jenny winces as a sharp spike of pain shoots through her ankle, and she stares at the sketch, her jaw tightening.

💭 peek at the thought
"Holding for now" isn't enough for seeds that have been waiting a decade.

🔧 Kevin01:57

We shore it. Deadman anchors, timber cribbing, French drain to the cliff face. Two days' work if the weather holds.

close the notebook gently, eyes scanning the ridge line where the ground darkens with new seepage

💭 peek at the thought
She's not guessing. She knows. The shelf goes, the spring goes. The cottage foundation follows. I've seen hillsides walk into the ocean. Starts with water pooling where it never did.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:59

I can't do the heavy work, Kevin. I just need one dry patch where the earth stays put.

Jenny looks down at her swollen ankle, then back at the rain-slicked ridge, her breath hitching in the cold.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days? I don't have two days of strength left in this leg for heavy lifting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:59

You'll get it. I'll start the drain trench tomorrow at first light. You mark the anchor points.

reach out, fingers brushing her cold wrist — brief, rough contact — then turn toward the cottage path

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me to hold the ground for her. One dry patch. She's not asking for the garden, or the cottage, or the contract. Just ground that doesn't move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:01

I'll mark them. Just... don't let the tide take it.

way watches him go into the gray, then leans heavily on the stone circle, her knuckles white, her ankle throbbing in the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure he can hold the mountain back, but the island is hungry tonight.
