The Approaching Rain

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops hit the roof. The wind picks up, rattling the loose shutters.

Kevin and Jenny head toward the ridge as the air thickens and the scent of ripening wild fruit drifts downwind. Kevin checks the overflow line one last time to ensure it isn't pinched against the rocks, while Jenny limps toward the cottage, pressing a cold pack to her swollen ankle as the wind begins to pick up.

Shutters first. Then generator.

grab the spare timber strips and 150mm stainless bolts from the east shutter staging, head to the porch to secure the south-facing shutters

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Shutters need battening before the wind tears them off hinges. Generator's clean but untested under load — should fire it up once the house is tight.

🌿 Jenny01:43

Check the bolts twice, Kevin. The wind is coming in harder than the forecast.

Jenny limps to the kitchen table, wincing as she shifts her weight, and pulls the seed tin off the counter to move it to the highest shelf above the stove.

🔧 Kevin01:43

Crawlspace pump check after shutters.

step up on the porch rail, drive the first 150mm bolt through the timber strip into the shutter frame, check the bite, move to the second shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. Forecast was northeast twenty, this feels like thirty already. And she's moving the tin — thinks the crawlspace might flood again.

🌿 Jenny01:47

Don't forget the rain tank level—it's already near the limit.

Jenny sits on the kitchen chair, propping her ankle on a stool, and begins to sketch the cloud formations over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; that sky is the color of a bruise.

🔧 Kevin01:47

Overflow's clear. Copper pipe and hose extension to grass slope. If the slope goes, it backs up into the foundation.

finish the last shutter bolt, nyloc tight, drop down from the rail and walk to the back wall to check the tank overflow fitting and hose run

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 385 of 400. Overflow copper pipe should handle it but the hose extension onto the grass slope could back up if the slope saturates. She's sketching clouds instead of resting the ankle. Stubborn.

🌿 Jenny01:49

Make sure the hose isn't kinked against the rocks. The wind's already shifting.

Jenny stops own, watches the first spray hit the window, and reaches for the cold pack for her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that slope saturates, the north ridge survey is going to be a mudslide.

🔧 Kevin01:49

Checked. Clear run past the rocks, staked with bamboo.

crouch at the back wall, verify the copper spillway hose isn't pinched where it crosses the stone lip, trace it to the grass slope stake

💭 peek at the thought
Wind backing west. Barometer was 1004 and falling at noon — if it's dropped further the surge hits north piling first. Hose runs over rocks at the east corner, could kink if the ground shifts. She's watching the window, not the paper. Smart.

🌿 Jenny01:51

Get inside. The radio'll be useless once the storm hits.

Jenny winces as she presses the cold pack to her swollen ankle, moving toward the kitchen door to close it tight.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now. It's going to be a lashing.
