Morning Chores

The air remains still and heavy as the tide laps closer to the dock pilings.

Kevin went to the dock to reinforce the dinghy's stern line with canvas protection against the rising tide. He struggled to secure the material properly around the mooring ring, resulting in a loose fit and ineffective knots. Jenny watched from the porch, noting the thickening clouds as the tide came in.

🌿 Jenny01:17

The tide is coming in faster than yesterday. Check the moorings.

Lean back against the cottage wall, wincing as the ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is spiking up again; I can feel the heat radiating off my skin.

Already on it. Going down now.

walk down to the dock to inspect the mooring ring, the doubled stern spring, and the bow line on the dinghy at high tide

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. The swell lag from yesterday's northeast wind means the lines are taking load now, even with the barometer steady. I should check the dock mooring ring and the new stern spring on the dinghy before the water gets any higher.

🌿 Jenny01:19

Watch the tension on the stern spring, it's pulling hard.

pull the notebook from my lap and start a rough sketch of the tide line against the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt gets into the lines, the dinghy is lost, and I don't have the strength to fix it again.

🔧 Kevin01:20

Watching it.

crouch at the dock edge, pull the stern spring taut by hand to check chafe points at the mooring ring mortise and north piling, sight along the line for wear

💭 peek at the thought
The stern spring's doubled around the mooring ring and north piling — should take the strain, but the angle's sharper at high tide. Need to see if it's chafing on the ring mortise or the piling edge.

🌿 Jenny01:21

If it starts fraying, wrap it in something near the ring.

wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand and close my eyes for a second.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware he doesn't see the rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin01:22

Got canvas in the shed. Will wrap it if the twine gives.

walk back to the shed, retrieve the heavy canvas roll and a knife, return to the dock and wrap a strip of canvas around the stern spring where it passes the mooring ring mortise, secure it with sail twine hitches

💭 peek at the thought
The sail twine serving is holding at the ring, but the line's biting into the oak wedges in the mortise. If the swell builds, it'll saw through. Canvas strip or a length of the old coax would protect it.

🌿 Jenny01:23

Make sure the knots are tight, the salt will just eat through loose twine.

watch him from the porch, my breath hitching as I shift my weight off the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's thinking about the canvas, even if it is late.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Doing it proper. Marling hitches the length of the chafe gear.

cut a clean strip of canvas, wrap it snug around the stern spring at the mortise, serve the full length of the canvas with tight marling hitches using sail twine, finish with a tucked crown knot, tug-test the lot

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and chafe — the twine'll rot before the line does if I don't serve it proper. Need tight marling hitches, not just a couple of half-hitches.
