The approaching front

The air grows heavy with humidity as the first heavy drops hit the garden tarp. The dinghy bobs sharply in the swell, the unprotected rope already straining.

Kevin works on the generator to clean the fuel system while the clouds thicken overhead. Jenny heads to the north slope to check for erosion and then to the dock as the tide recedes.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Coming in. Boat's taking the ground wrong.

haul the dinghy bow line hand-over-hand, pull her clear of the pilings and let the stern swing free into the swell

💭 peek at the thought
Canvas won't hold on a moving ring in this chop. Need to get the boat off the dock before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny01:27

Get the tin inside, Kevin. way.

Walk into the kitchen, grab grandmother's seed tin from the counter, and set it on the high shelf above the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rain hits hard, the north ridge will be a mudslide before I even get up there.

🔧 Kevin01:27

Got it.

grab the tin from the shelf, tuck it under my oilskin, and step out onto the porch to check the garden tarp corners before the wind gets under them

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Tin on the shelf beats tin in the bilge if water comes through the door.

🌿 Jenny01:29

Watch the south stakes, the wind is already shifting.

Pick up the notebook and pencil, sketching the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get the seeds damp if he isn't careful with that tarp.

🔧 Kevin01:31

On it.

cross the garden at a crouch, drive the heel of my boot onto each south stake to test — two move, one pulls clean — yank the loose ones, reset them deeper with the mallet, and cinch the tarp corners down hard with the heavy twine

💭 peek at the thought
South stakes took a beating last blow. If they go, the cloth sails and the tomato row gets shredded.

🌿 Jenny01:37

Check the seacocks again when you're at the boat.

Stand up slowly, wincing at my ankle, and watch the first real sheets of rain hit the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it for now, but that pressure is dropping too fast.

🔧 Kevin01:37

I'll check the seacocks. Hold the door shut tight, Jenny.

point the flashlight at the hull bulkhead, lift the seacock covers, squeeze each valve for a few seconds, feel for running water, patch any leaks with the marine sealant from the spare kit, then re‑clamp the covers and test the door seal wi

💭 peek at the thought
One leak here, one leak there. Need to be sure the hull holds before the rain swallows the porch.

🌿 Jenny01:39

The door is locked. Just watch out for the swell.

Pull the heavy door shut, sit by the stove, and listen to the rain start drumming on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat goes under, I'm stuck here for another year.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:39

Bow line's bare. Be right back.

jog down the slick path to the dock, strip the last clean section of half‑inch rope, wrap a proper chafe sleeve round the bow line where it kisses the chock, seize it tight with sail twine, and haul the slack home so the boat rides the surg

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's building fast. Dinghy's riding high but the bow line's got no chafe gear left. One hard surge and she parts.

🌿 Jenny01:41

Hurry up. The wind is screaming through the eaves.

Trace the edge of a sketch in the notebook, my fingers trembling slightly from the cold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to catch himself on the rocks if that tide rises.
