Afternoon work: starter cord and limpet prep

Kevin is at the dock with a broken starter cord; Jenny is on the beach heading to the cottage with a bucket of limpets.

Kevin works at the dock, dismantling the Yanmar's recoil housing to rewind the starter cord. Jenny is in the kitchen, scrubbing sand from a bucket of limpets and setting a pot of water on the stove.

You crouch by the Yanmar, turning the broken cord over in your hands. The recoil spring still tensions when you rotate the flywheel by hand, so the mechanism isn't seized. You have half-inch three-strand rope on the porch that could serve, but it's thicker than the original cord and may not feed through the guide cleanly.

The half-inch rope is too thick for the starter guide — it'll jam or shred the first pull. Need something thinner. The old cord's keeper end is still intact; I can splice a new section onto it using the tarred marline from the sail repair kit, or pull the starter assembly and rewind it proper with the original spec cord if there's any left in the tool roll.

Inside: a partial spool of 3mm polyester starter cord (about four metres), a hank of tarred marline, two spare recoil springs, and the usual scatter of split pins and circlips. The 3mm cord is the right diameter for the Yanmar's guide. The recoil housing on the engine will need to come off to rewind it properly — three bolts, ten minutes if the threads aren't corroded.]

Good. The 3mm cord is exactly what the Yanmar needs. Four metres is plenty — the original spec is around 3.2 metres for this model. I'll pull the recoil housing, rewind the spring, thread the new cord, and knot the handle end. Should take twenty minutes if the bolts cooperate.
