← Day 68

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

Midday Low Tide

Kevin stands at the dock, wiping grease from his hands, while Jenny is crouched by the receding tide line.

Kevin's Yanmar starter cord snapped on the first pull, leaving the engine unstarted and the cord frayed. Jenny made it off the tide-pool shelf just as the rising water covered the lower rocks, carrying her bucket of limpets back toward the cottage.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

Kevin checks the seals on the injectors he just bled, ensuring no leaks will occur under pressure. The wind picks up through the palms, but the engine remains silent for the moment.

🔧 Kevin20:26

Kevin — walk to the cottage porch, pick up the shortwave handset, switch to Tom's frequency, key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
Injectors bled clean. No seep at the unions. She'll fire when I'm ready. Wind's freshening — good test conditions if the sea stays workable.

🔧 Kevin20:30

Tom, Kevin. Sorrel Island. Fourteen hundred. Channel open. Out.

set the handset down on the porch rail, walk back to the dock, climb into the dinghy, reach for the Yanmar's starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's warm. Static on Tom's frequency. He won't answer but I'll leave the channel open like I said. Fourteen hundred comes in ten minutes. Engine test first — if the Yanmar runs clean, the dinghy gets its heart back.

🔧 Kevin20:34

Kevin — secure the painter to the dock cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, brace a foot on the transom, give the starter cord a sharp pull

💭 peek at the thought
Starter cord's in my hand. Cold engine. First pull's always the tell. If she catches, I bleed the air at the rail and put her under load. If not, back to the injectors. Wind's steady southeast — dinghy'll drift starboard if I don't tie off the painter first.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

Jenny works quickly to pry the limpets from the rocks before the tide begins to turn. The sun is high, warming the back as the salt dries on her skin.

🌿 Jenny20:25

Jenny — scrape remaining limpets from rocks, place in bucket with collected seawater, check watch for time to reach cottage before high tide

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's rising faster than expected. I need to finish gathering these limpets and get back before the water covers the rocks.

🌿 Jenny20:29

Jenny — stand up, lift the bucket, walk across the black rock shelf toward the beach.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already touching the lower shelf. If I stay another five minutes, I'll lose the best ones to the surge.

🌿 Jenny20:33

Jenny — wipe salt from eyes, step onto the sand, and look back toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. I need to get these de-salted before the spray makes everything gritty.
