Evening meal at the cottage

The onshore breeze has died down, leaving the heavy, humid heat of the wet season. Kevin and Jenny meet at the table with the smell of boiled limpets lingering, as they assess the compromised pantry.

The air is heavy and humid, the thickening season clouds pressing down on the flat, grey sky. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools and the muddy flats. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and medicinal poultice lingers while Jenny rests her bandaged ankle and Kevin watches the coming storm.

The screen is torn. We need to patch it before the moisture gets in.

sits heavily in the kitchen chair, rubbing the swollen ankle while staring at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rats get into the flour, we're done before the boat even arrives. My tackle feels like it's melting.

Screen first. Tin can wait.

walk to the porch and examine the torn screen door, testing the frame with my fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the E tin again. The one that came off the north cliffs, rusted through the sides but still sealed at the lid. She hasn't asked what I think is in it. Hasn't asked why I haven't opened it.

🌿 Jenny07:11

The tin is damp, Kevin. If the seeds rot, we lose three years.

winces as she shifts her weight, reaching for her notebook to mark the humidity level.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin can't wait, the mold is already eating the edges. He's always so linear.

Mesh roll's in the shed. Spline tool on the workbench. I'll patch the screen, you check the packets. Don't put weight on that ankle.

head to the shed to retrieve the mesh roll and spline tool

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The E tin sat on the porch through two storms. Damp exterior, she said. But the heirloom packets inside were re-wrapped in dry newspaper with desiccant. If moisture got past that... The screen's a five-minute job with the roll of mesh in the shed and the spline tool. The tin needs a proper look — not a glance.

🌿 Jenny07:14

I'll check them, but they need a dry surface soon.

pulls the heirloom seed tin toward her, carefully opening the lid to inspect for white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a mesh patch solves the humidity, but the air itself is what's killing the germination.

🔧 Kevin07:14

Frame's sound. Be quick.

pull the old spline from the screen door frame with the spline tool, rolling it out in one long coil

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Always. Even with the ankle throbbing, she'll catalogue every packet before I've cut the first length of mesh. The E tin sits separate — heavy, rusted, lid still sealed. She hasn't touched it. Won't, unless I hand it to her or she decides it's time. The screen repair is straightforward: pull the old spline, stretch new mesh, roll it tight. Ten minutes if the frame isn't warped.

🌿 Jenny07:15

I'm moving as fast as this leg allows.

carefully lays out the small paper seed packets on the kitchen table, looking for any sign of damp-rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't hurry, my grandmother's seeds will be nothing but mush by next tide.

🔧 Kevin07:16

Take your time. Seeds matter more than speed.

cut a fresh length of mesh from the roll, oversized by two inches each side, and lay it across the frame

💭 peek at the thought
She's not slow. Never slow. The ankle's the only brake she's ever had. Packets spread out: tomato, pepper, basil, sea beet. The compromised ones she bagged yesterday — two tomato, one pepper, one basil with mold at edges — those are already in newspaper for burning. What's left should be clean. Unless the humidity crept past the desiccant. The old spline comes free brittle, cracking in pieces. Frame's straight. Good.
