The Arrival of the Rain

The first heavy drops hit the corrugated metal roof as the sky finally turns black.

The rain has intensified into a steady drumming against the cottage roof as the tide rises toward the shore. Kevin braved the down to check the strain on the dinghy's moorings and ensure the tarps are anchored against the wind. Inside, Jenny remains in the kitchen chair, elevating her swollen ankle on a crate while watching and sketching the erratic patterns of the water racing down the glass.

Rain's settling in. Gonna check the dinghy moorings and the tarp anchors. You stay put.

Pull on oilskin jacket, grab headlamp, and head out the porch door toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer held 1020 but the sky don't lie. Need to check the dinghy lines and the garden tarp before the wind picks up proper. Jenny's ankle won't take the porch steps in this.

Be careful on the north slope, it's turning to soup.

Sit back in the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a crate, and open the sketchbook to draw the way the rain is forming on the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself swept into the channel; that mud is like grease right now.

North slope first. Trench drains to the spring — if it blows, the cottage foundation's next.

Walk down the garden path toward the north slope intercept trench, headlamp beam cutting through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the north slope. Greenheart shoring held the tide but this rain on top'll saturate the bank. Check the intercept trench first, then the dinghy. She's watching the window — good, means she's staying off the ankle.

🌿 Jenny07:21

Just watch the water line, it's moving faster than it looks.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle, wince at the pressure, and listen to the rain drumming on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If that slope goes, the whole garden goes with it, and I can't lose those heirloom seeds to a landslide.
