Midday Heat and Rising Tide
The trade wind holds as the sun continues its climb, and the tide reaches the lower of the newly new dock planks.
Kevin and Jenny shared coffee on the porch while watching the high tide batter the dock. Both recorded observations in their notebooks — Kevin logging the south piling repair as stable, Jenny noting north ridge soil pH and planning to move the seed tin to the sea cave at dawn.
Kevin — walk down to the dock and inspect the south piling sister and the new planks at high tide

The swell is already hitting the pier, Kevin. Wait for the tide to turn.
Sit on the porch steps, lifting my own onto a crate, and sketch the way the water is lashing the new wood.

Fair enough. Coffee's on if you want a top-up.
pour two mugs of coffee and lean on the porch rail, watching the swell hit the dock

Thanks.
Take the mug, the warmth seeping into my palms, and focus on the salt grain of the wood in my sketch.

Kevin — sip coffee and scan the dock lines, the garden, the horizon — nothing moving but water and wind

Jenny — take a slow sip of the coffee and lean my head against the stone wall, watching the rain ripple the tide.

Kevin — refill my mug, pull the notebook from my pocket, and add a line to the dock log: south piling sister holding, planks dry at high water, no movement in shims

"You wrote it down too, didn't you?" (I look up from the page, then at the dock log, then back at my own notebook)
Set the mug down hard enough to stain the wooden table and pick up my own notebook, flipping to a clean page. </think>THOUGHT: Of course he did. Write down what he just wrote, then add: "Stable. Will move seed tin to cave at first light."

Force of habit. The trust likes paper trails.
close my notebook and set it beside her on the table

Paper trails can catch things too.
Grab the notebook and flip to a fresh page, then jot down: "North ridge soil pH 6.2 - confirmed stable. Seeds to cave tomorrow dawn."
