A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin stands on the porch with the porcelain insulator and self-amalgamating tape in hand, looking out at the steady trade wind. Jenny is inside the cottage, resting her ankle while the tide rises steadily against the shore. The midday heat of the wet season is heavy, and the supply boat is still nine days away.

🔧 Kevin09:54

Kevin — walk onto the porch, set the hand trowel and notebook on the table, go to the radio shelf and take down the spare porcelain insulator and the roll of self-amalgamating tape

💭 peek at the thought
The walk back from the north slope was quiet. Jenny moved slow on the cane, didn't complain. The trench held — that's something. But the tamarind trunk weeping at the foundation means the ridge is still shedding water where we don't want it. Need to check the generator fuel filter and oil before the supply boat window closes. And the aerial insulator I taped last night — PVC sleeve won't last in real wind. Spare ceramic's on the shelf, self-amalgamating tape too. Do it proper this time.

🌿 Jenny09:54

You don't need to tape the insulator up right now, Kevin.

Sit on the porch steps, rubbing my way ankle, and watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fussing with the radio again while the ridge is literally melting away.

🔧 Kevin09:56

Generator first. Fuel filter, oil top-up. Then the aerial.

set the insulator and tape back on the radio shelf, walk to the generator shed, pull the dipstick and check the oil level, then locate the fuel filter housing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The wind's steady, not rising. The jury-rig held through the night. Generator filter and oil come first — supply boat window's the hard deadline. Can do the insulator proper after, or tomorrow if the barometer holds. But the tape and ceramic are already in my hand.

🌿 Jenny09:57

The filter is probably choked with silt from that last runoff.

Pull out my sketchbook and draw the fracture patterns I saw in the soil on the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator dies, we don't even have power to pump the water for the seeds.

🔧 Kevin09:58

Kevin — unscrew the fuel filter housing, drain the bowl into a jar to inspect for water and silt, swap in the spare element, reseat the housing, then pull the dipstick again and top up oil from the can

💭 peek at the thought
She's probably right about the silt. The runoff after that storm was thick with it, and the generator's been pulling from the tank since. Filter housing's accessible — spin it off, dump the element, check the bowl for water and grit. Got a spare element from the crate stores. Oil's clean but low, top it from the can. Ten minutes work if the threads don't fight.

🌿 Jenny09:59

Check the bowl for water; the trade wind's been pushing it hard.

Press the pencil to the paper, sketching the way the root mat is holding the ridge together.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's actually doing something, even if it's just the engine.
