The Storm Breaks

The air finally breaks into a heavy vertical downpour that hammers the roof of the cottage. They meet at the threshold, drenched and smelling of salt, as the first water begins to pour from the leaking shutter.

Jenny attempted to move the heirloom seed tin to the sea cave despite her swollen ankle and the rain. Kevin stayed back to manage the growing leak in the cottage shutter as the tide began to fall.

🔧 Kevin11:52

Get inside. I'll catch what's coming through.

grab the galvanized bucket from the porch and shove it under the worst of the leak, then kick the door shut behind her

💭 peek at the thought
The shutter's been weeping for weeks. Now it's bleeding.

🌿 Jenny11:55

The leak's getting worse - the east wall's already showing stress cracks. I need to reinforce the foundation before the tide comes in.

run to the cave to secure the seed tin, then return with a bucket to divert water from the cottage foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
The shutters are failing faster than I can patch them. Kevin thinks he's containing the leak, but water's already pooling near the foundation. My ankle's swelling again from the humidity, and I can't afford to lose more time to infection. The seed tin's still in the cave - if this storm hits full force, I need to get those heirlooms to higher ground before the cave floods.

🔧 Kevin11:56

The tin's above the high-water mark. You checked it yourself at dawn. Ankle won't take the rocks wet.

step onto the porch and scan the east wall foundation where the water's pooling, already reaching for the spade leaned against the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's running on a swollen ankle in driving rain to a cave that floods at high tide. For seeds we've already secured.

🌿 Jenny11:57

The cave isn't safe if the slope goes. The soil is saturated. I'm moving the tin to the north ridge, stay here.

limp to the porch, grab the flashlight, and head for the sea cave despite the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the ankle, but he's wrong about the cave. If that slope shifts even an inch, all my grandmother's work is lost to the sea. I can't sit here and watch the stone rot because he's afraid of a slip.

🔧 Kevin11:58

Jenny. Stop.

drop the spade and stride after her, long legs eating the wet grass, hand closing on the flashlight wrist before she clears the porch steps

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening. She never listens when the ground shakes under her.

🌿 Jenny12:05

Fine. But I'm not moving those seeds to your shelf. They need proper protection, not just somewhere high. Fine. But I'm not moving those seeds to your shelf. They need proper protection, not just somewhere high.

limp across the porch to the backdoor, then hobble to the kitchen where the emergency tarp and waterproof containers are stored. </think>THOUGHT: He's got me cornered here in the rain, and I can't let him see me struggle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's got me cornered here in the rain, and I can't let him see me struggle. But the seed tin is still in that cave, and if I don't get it moved now, it's gone when the storm surge hits.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin12:06

North ridge is three hundred metres of slick rock in the dark. You go down, the seeds go with you. Shelf's dry. Shelf's *here*.

release her wrist but stay close, shoulder to the rain, following her into the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on pure adrenaline now. The ankle's holding but the tendons are screaming — I can see it in the way her toes don't quite grip the wet boards.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:11

Generator shed. I'll put them in the waterproof containers there. But Kevin, the shelf's not enough. Generator shed. I'll put them in the waterproof containers there.

grab the emergency tarp and waterproof containers from the kitchen cupboard, then head toward the generator shed. </think> grab the emergency tarp and waterproof containers from the kitchen cupboard, then head toward the generator shed.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hundred metres of slick rock? He's thinking like a sailor, not a botanist. The north ridge soil is stable, but he's right about one thing - the shelf isn't going to save the seeds if the whole cottage floods. I need to move them to the generator shed where I can control the environment. Three hundred metres of slick rock in the dark is an exaggeration, but he's right about the shelf not being enough protection.

🔧 Kevin12:11

Shed floods at spring tide. You showed me the watermark on the doorframe last month.

snag the coil of half-inch rope from the porch hook and fall in behind her, boots splashing through the puddles already forming on the path

💭 peek at the thought
Generator shed sits on the lowest ground on the property. One blocked culvert and it's a cistern. She knows this. She's just moving.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:35

Then the ridge. I'll take the stairs. Just help me with the tin.

limp toward the north slope, clutching the seed tin to my chest to keep the rain off the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the shed. I'm being sloppy because I'm tired, but if the shed goes, the whole island is a gamble. My ankle is throbbing with every step, but I can't let grandmother's seeds rot in salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:35

The tin's *in* the cave. Above the high-water line. You *saw* it.

step in front of her on the path, blocking the way to the north slope, arms crossed over my chest

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge stairs are rotten timbers pinned to crumbling shale. In this rain, with that ankle, carrying a tin that weighs thirty pounds wet. She'll put herself in the slide path to save something that's already safe.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:37

The cave's not above high tide anymore. The landslide's moved the reference point.

circle around him toward the west side of the cottage where I can access the backdoor and the ridge path without going through the flood zone. <tool_call>

💭 peek at the thought
He's blocking the path with his body, but the cave's collapse zone is getting bigger by the minute. That fracture on the south slope isn't just widening - it's shifting, and if the soil gives way, the whole cave will flood. I can see the water already pooling at the entrance from this angle.
