The First Gust

Kevin and Jenny meet back at the cottage as the first heavy wind picks up the garden dust.

The heat is a physical weight, the grey air still and thick with the scent of salt and damp earth. The south slope groans, the tamarind roots creaking under the tension of the saturated soil, signaling the coming storm. The retreat to the cave was slow, a crawl against the rising humidity to ensure the seeds stayed dry before the deluge sets in.

🌿 Jenny11:41

The wind is turning. We need to get the tin to the cave now.

Jenny winces as she shifts weight onto her good leg and grabs the heavy seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop fast; I can feel it in my swollen joint.

🔧 Kevin11:41

I'll take the tin. You take the oilcloth and silica packs.

step forward and take the seed tin from her hands, adjusting grip to carry it against my chest

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The tin's heavy and the path to the cave is slick. She'll go down if she tries to carry it alone.

🌿 Jenny11:43

Just watch your step. The slope is already turning to mush.

Jenny clutches the oilcloth-wrapped seeds under her arm and limps own the sea cave.

💭 peek at the thought
He's taking the weight, but I'm still the one watching the path.

🔧 Kevin11:43

Slow. I'm right behind you.

follow her down the garden path toward the sea cave, testing each foot placement before committing weight, keeping the tin centered against my chest

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the slope. The clay's already greasing up. One wrong footing with this weight and we both go.

🌿 Jenny11:45

I know. way don't trip on the tamarind roots.

Jenny stops to steady herself against the whitewashed stone, breathing through the pain in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the slope gives, the whole tin is lost to the salt anyway.

🔧 Kevin11:45

Lean on me. Tin's not going anywhere.

shift the tin to my left arm and extend my right hand back to her, waiting

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through it but the ankle's worse than she's letting on. The swelling's tracked up past the brace line. We need to move but not at the cost of her going down on this slope.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:47

I'm fine. Just... a second.

Jenny takes his hand and leans her weight against his shoulder, eyes fixed on the fracture in the slope.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy. It's like breathing through wet wool.

🔧 Kevin11:47

Roots are still holding. For now.

take her weight without comment, adjusting my stance on the slick clay, and start moving again toward the cave entrance, one deliberate step at a time

💭 peek at the thought
The fracture's widened since morning. Water's cutting a new channel behind the tamarind root mass. If that lets go, the whole garden face goes with it. She sees it too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:49

We need to move. Before the wind turns.

Jenny follows him toward the cave mouth, her hand tight on his arm.

💭 peek at the thought
The earth is weeping. I can hear the silt shifting under the roots.

🔧 Kevin11:49

Inside. High alcove. Same spot as before.

duck through the low cave entrance, boots finding the worn footholds on the wet rock, and move deeper to the dry alcove above the high-water mark

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west-southwest. That'll drive the swell straight into the cove. The cave mouth will be washing out inside twenty minutes. We get the tin wedged and get out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:51

Let's stay for a minute.

Jenny sinks against the cold stone wall, letting out a sharp breath as she cradles her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The cave is dry, but the air smells of salt and rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:51

We stay.

set the seed tin carefully in its alcove, wedge the oilcloth and silica packs around it, then lower myself to the stone beside her, back against the damp wall, and wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's done. The adrenaline's run out. Ankle's throbbing, the climb took everything she had, and she knows it. The tin's placed. The oilcloth's wrapped. Nothing else matters right now.
