Midday meal and storm watch

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch for a midday meal of corned beef and limpets. The sky has darkened to a uniform slate grey. Wind gusts bend the shade cloth over the garden. The barometer on the porch reads 1018 hPa and falling fast. They need to decide on final storm preparations before the weather closes in.

Kevin checks the generator's fuel levels while the humidity thickens before the storm. Jenny inspects the north slope drainage, checking for signs of instability as the air pressure holds.

Barometer's falling faster than the tide's rising. Six hours, maybe less. What's your read on the south slope trench?

walk to the porch rail and scan the garden slope, checking the shade cloth anchors and the drainage trench outlet

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropped two millibars since I checked the generator. That's not holding — that's moving. She'll have seen it too. The garden's already showing strain; the fracture on the south slope won't take much more saturation before the tamarind roots give. We've got maybe six hours of workable light and tide before this hits proper. Need to secure the dinghy mooring, batten the generator shed, check the cottage shutters, and get the radio aerial down if the wind shifts northerly. She's moving slower on the ankle. I'll take the heavy work. She knows the slope better than me — her call on whether the trench holds or needs more.

The trench's holding for now, but the slope's unstable. If that tamarind gives way, we lose the garden whole.

grab the heirloom seed tin from the kitchen counter and head toward the door

💭 peek at the thought
The tamarind roots are straining, and I can see fresh soil displacement near the fracture line. Six hours isn't enough to properly stabilize this. I need to get the seed tin secured before the storm hits.

I'll take the generator shed and dinghy mooring. You take the cave. Meet back at the cottage for shutters and aerial. Don't carry the tin one-handed — use the strap.

step inside, grab the canvas strap from the hook by the door, and hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the seed tin to the sea cave herself. Ankle be damned. She won't ask for help and I won't insult her by hovering, but I'm not letting her carry that weight alone on unstable ground. The tin's heavy, the path's slick, and the tide's coming in. I'll take the generator shed and the dinghy mooring — heavy work, clear lines. She knows the slope. We meet back at the cottage for shutters and radio aerial. That's the plan whether she says it or not.

I know. way watch the tide.

loop the strap over the seed tin and head toward the sea cave

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a strap makes the weight disappear while the world is literally shifting. My ankle is throbbing with every step I take toward that door.

Kevin — walk to the generator shed, pull the door open, and start disconnecting the battery bank terminals with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. Good. The strap's across her chest, weight distributed. She knows the tide windows — she charted them. Now the generator shed: batteries are the weak link. If the charge controller fails in a storm we lose radio, lights, the lot. Need to disconnect and move the battery bank to the cottage porch, run the generator only when we need it. Then the dinghy — double the stern spring, check the bow line slack for swell, deploy the storm anchor if the mooring ring holds. The ring held last night but the mortise is splintered. Oak wedges are driving deeper with each surge. That's the one that keeps me awake.

🌿 Jenny11:35

Jenny — hoist the seed tin over my shoulder and limp toward the sea cave

💭 peek at the thought
The weight of the tin is deceptive today, and my ankle is screaming. If I drop these in the surf, grandmother's legacy is lost to salt.
