Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the tide turns, the heirloom seed tin carried between them in the dry bag. The barometer reads 1011 steady. The swell still reaches the dock planks. They carry the letter from the trust and the medevac forms to leave at the stones.

Kevin and Jenny ascended the ridge to the old shrine to inspect the south slope fracture. Jenny struggled with the weight of the seed tin and her injured ankle as the tide fell, exposing the reef below.

🌿 Jenny13:55

Keep the tin level, Kevin. Don't let the salt get under the seal.

Sketch the new fracture on the south slope in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll have to choose between the seeds and the antibiotics.

🔧 Kevin13:57

Tin's level. Seal's tight. You're the one listing to port.

walk the ridge path toward the shrine, adjusting the dry bag strap on my shoulder, glancing at Jenny's ankle every few steps

💭 peek at the thought
The tin feels heavier than it should be — not the seeds, the weight of what we're leaving behind. My shoulder aches where the strap cuts through the shirt. She's walking slower than she lets on, favoring the left side. The swell still kissing the dock planks means the fracture's eating deeper with each tide. I should have checked it yesterday instead of arguing with the generator float. But we're here now, both of us, and the barometer's holding. That's something.

🌿 Jenny13:58

It's the weight. Just watch the path, the rocks are slick.

Stop to lean against the weathered way stones, rubbing the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the ankle, but the whole island feels heavy today.

🔧 Kevin14:00

You're stopping every fifty meters. That's not the weight.

halt two paces behind her, one hand on the dry bag strap, the other loose at my side, scanning the ridge path ahead for slick rock and the way stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's white-knuckling the cane. The ankle's hot through the bandage — I can see the swell from here. Tide's turning hard, swell still reaching the dock. We should have left the forms at the cottage and come back at slack water. But she insisted. The trust letter, the medevac forms, the tin — all of it weighs less than her saying nothing when I asked how bad it was.

🌿 Jenny14:00

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. I need to see the fracture before the tide turns.

Wince as I shift my weight onto my good leg, gripping the rough surface of the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too observant for his own good. I just need to reach the ridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:02

Tide's falling. Fracture's exposed for another hour, maybe two. We go slow. You lean on me when the path narrows.

shift the dry bag to my left hip, freeing my right arm, and move close enough that my shoulder's there if she needs it without her having to ask

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 1011 and steady, she says dropping. Means she's feeling it in the joint before the needle moves. The fracture's at the south slope — tide falling exposes it, but the swell's still hammering the base. She wants eyes on it before the water comes back up. Smart. Stubborn. Same thing. The way stones are slick with salt spray. One wrong step on that ankle and we're not walking back.

🌿 Jenny14:04

Then move closer when I signal. Don't grab unless I touch your sleeve.

Nod toward the south slope, where the new fracture splits the tamarind roots, and take another careful step.

💭 peek at the thought
His proximity is both a threat and a lifeline.

🔧 Kevin14:06

Your sleeve. My eyes. We're clear.

fall in half a pace behind and to her right, dry bag settled against my hip, boots placed careful on the wet stone, watching the path and the slope both

💭 peek at the thought
Her rules. Always her rules. Touch the sleeve, not the arm — like I don't know the difference between helping and hovering. The tamarind roots are screaming loud enough to hear from here, that fracture's eating live wood. Tide's dropping fast now, swell still pounding the reef edge. She's walking into the teeth of it because the notebook needs a sketch and the trust needs a report. I'll follow her lead. But if that ankle gives, the sleeve rule goes out the window.

🌿 Jenny14:09

Look at the way the soil is pulling. It's wider than yesterday.

Point to the jagged way crack in the earth, my hand trembling slightly from the effort.

💭 peek at the thought
If that slope gives again, the whole ridge goes into the sea.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:09

Clay lens at the base. Whole block's on a hinge. Another spring tide and the tamarind goes.

set the dry bag down on a flat stone, unshoulder the notebook from its waterproof case, flip to a fresh page and hold it ready with the pen uncapped, waiting for her to dictate measurements

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The fracture's chewed another hand's width since yesterday — the tamarind roots on the seaward side are exposed clean to the air, pale tips drinking salt wind. Soil's not just pulling, it's peeling. The whole slope's sliding on a clay lens I couldn't see from the ridge. Swell hits the base and the vibration travels up through the rock. Notebook sketch won't catch the movement. She's trembling. Cold or pain or both. The tide's still dropping. We have minutes before the water turns and starts pushing back up the fracture.
