The night before the storm

The gusts pick up now, rattling the loose boards in the window frames as Kevin and Jenny prepare for a long night of listening to the rising tide against the dock pilings.

Kevin heads to the dock to inspect the mooring lines as the tide begins to ebb, while Jenny stays in the cottage, continuing her sketches of the sea cave floor while managing her feverish, throbbing ankle.

🔧 Kevin20:51

Wind's backing west. Swell'll build on the ebb. I'll walk the dock lines before we lose light.

pull on oilskin jacket and grab headlamp, walk out onto porch and down the path to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting — gusts coming harder now, not steady trade. Barometer's been falling all day. South piling brace held at high tide but the mortise on the mooring ring is still splintered. If the swell builds overnight with this pressure drop, the dock takes the full hit at low tide. Need to check the lines again before dark fully sets.

🌿 Jenny20:52

Check the tensioners on the gunwale, they looked loose.

Jenny wraps the blanket tighter around her legs and picks up the sketch of the sea cave floor.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises too high, the dinghy will take the way and I can't fix that alone.

🔧 Kevin20:53

On it. Back in ten.

walk down the dock to the dinghy, crouch at the gunwale and inspect both chafe guards and tensioner knots on the stern spring and bow line

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the gunwale tensioners from the cottage. Sharp eyes. The doubled stern spring and bow line I ran yesterday — if the chafe guards shifted under load, the splices could saw through. Need to check both ends.

🌿 Jenny20:54

Be careful, the wood is slick with spray.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to shade the cracks in the cave floor sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the knots while the whole island is shifting under our feet.

🔧 Kevin20:54

Aye.

move carefully along the dock planks, testing each step, reach the dinghy and run fingers along the chafe guard on the starboard gunwale where the stern spring leads to the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Dock planks are salt-slick and the tide's still pushing spray over the seaward edge. One bad step on the algae-coated sister plank and I'm in the water. Forty minutes in Biscay taught me respect for cold dark water — but this is warm, shallow, and I know every rotten board. Still. Careful.

🌿 Jenny20:55

The way ring looks corroded, check the bolts too.

Jenny pauses her sketch, pencil held mid-air, listening for the clink of metal against the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spring snaps, the Yanmar is lost to the current and I'm stranded.

🔧 Kevin20:58

Checking.

crouch at the mooring ring base, run fingers over each bolt head and nut, test for movement with a wrench, shine headlamp on threads where exposed

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The ring's mortise was splintered when we recovered it, and the oak wedges are holding but the bolts through the steel doubler plate take the real load. If corrosion's eaten the threads or the shanks, the whole ring pulls out under a big swell. Four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nylocs. Need to feel each one.

🌿 Jenny20:59

If they're stripped, we need to double the line before the tide peaks.

Jenny leans forward, her ankle throbbing in sympathy as she watches the beam of light cut through the dark on the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is eating through that iron faster than the fever is eating through me.
