Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the light thins, the ditch bag slung over Kevin's shoulder. The shrine's stone ring appears through the mist — weathered names carved deep, 'LB' among them. Jenny leans on her driftwood cane, ankle wrapped, breath steady. Kevin carries the storm lantern. The tide is low, exposing the dark flats below the cliffs.

Kevin and Jenny visited the old shrine at low tide, where Jenny discovered the initials 'LB' carved into the stone. The air is heavy and the pressure is dropping, while Jenny's fever remains high despite the slow trek back down the ridge.

🌿 Jenny06:22

Look at the carving, Kevin. It's not just a name.

Jenny reaches out to touch the worn letters of 'LB' with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil here is too acidic for the grandmother's seeds, but the ridge transition is stable enough.

🔧 Kevin06:22

Mm.

hold the storm lantern higher so the light catches the carving, watching her face more than the stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading something in that stone I never saw. The tremor in her fingers isn't just the cold.

🌿 Jenny06:25

They were here before the lighthouse was even built.

Jenny pulls her hand back from the cold stone, wincing as the movement pulls on her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's waiting for me to say something profound, but I'm too tired to be poetic.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:25

The lighthouse lot just wrote their names deeper. Didn't make them first.

shift the ditch bag strap off my shoulder, set it on a flat stone, reach for her elbow steadying without asking

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle's worse than she's letting on. She's favouring it harder since the transect.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:27

Everything gets worn down if left long enough.

Jenny leans a fraction of her weight against his arm, looking down at the soil where the ridge meets the cliff.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about ego, but it's just the weather winning.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:27

Not everything. The greenheart scarf joint's holding. The Yanmar's sealing. Your transect data's solid.

keep my hand on her elbow, thumb brushing the cuff of her jacket, letting the silence stretch while the lantern throws long shadows across the carved names

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the stone anymore. The ridge soil held on the transect — she said so herself. But she's tired in a way the metronidazole won't touch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:29

The soil is still too acidic, Kevin. Matter of fact.

Jenny looks at her muddy boots, then back at the shrine, the fever still a low hum under her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to fix things that can't be fixed with a wrench.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:29

Lime takes time. You know that.

slide my arm from her elbow to her waist, taking more of her weight, turning us slow back toward the cottage path

💭 peek at the thought
She's reciting data like a shield. pH 5.5–5.8 on the untreated slope, 6.8–7.0 where we limed. She knows the numbers. She logged them. But her voice is flat, and she's leaning heavier on my arm than she was a minute ago.

🌿 Jenny06:31

I know.

Jenny lets him lead her, her steps slow and uneven as the ankle throbs with every movement.

💭 peek at the thought
Time is the only thing I have too much of, and I'm running out of it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:31

Low tide tomorrow. I'll clear the spruce off the garden path. You stay off the ankle.

shorten my stride to match hers, the lantern swinging between us, the ditch bag left on the shrine stone — forgotten, or left on purpose

💭 peek at the thought
Three days to the supply boat. Five metronidazole doses left in the buried cache. The ditch bag has the medevac forms signed, the letter to Tom sealed. If the infection tracks deeper before the boat comes, I'll call it. She won't ask me to. She'll walk the ridge until she drops.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:33

The seeds still need to be checked.

Jenny looks back one last time at the silhouette of the shrine before the wind picks up.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks clearing a path is enough, but the weeds just keep growing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:33

Seeds are checked. Tin's sealed. They'll keep.

tug her gently forward, boots finding the ridge path by lantern light, the shrine fading behind us into the mist

💭 peek at the thought
The heirloom tin's dry, sealed, viable — she verified it herself two days ago. The sea beet envelope's capped and stored. She's making work to stay useful, to stay here. The wind's backing west. Barometer at 1011 and falling. Squall line building offshore.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:35

Not if they rot.

Jenny pulls her collar against the chill, the salt air stinging her feverish skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand the weight of what's in that tin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:35

They won't. I put desiccant in the packets. Newspaper wrap. Tin's on the shelf, not the floor.

walk on, the cottage lights a dim smear ahead through the driving mist, my hand firm at the small of her back

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the seeds. The damping-off in the pepper and lettuce cells — she bagged and burned the affected ones herself. The rest are clean. She knows this. But the words keep coming like she's stitching something closed.
