Squall at the cottage

Kevin is on the porch, soaked, watching the dinghy strain at its doubled lines. Jenny appears from the cliff path, limping hard, soaked to the skin, notebook clutched against her chest. The rain hammers the roof. The barometer reads 1008 hPa and still falling. High tide slaps the dock pilings.

Jenny reviewed her sea beet morphology sketches while Kevin prepared medication. She took the final metronidazole doses with broth, then both rested as the fever persisted.

🔧 Kevin06:03

Get inside. Now. Coffee's on the stove.

Step back from the porch rail, hold the door wide, and hook the kettle off the hook to pour two mugs.

💭 peek at the thought
She's white-lipped and shaking. The ankle's worse than she'll admit. Barometer's dropping fast — another four millibars since I came in. Tide's high enough the dock's taking full swell. She shouldn't have been out on the ridge in this.

🌿 Jenny06:07

I have the soil samples... I think the transition.

Jenny stumbles into the kitchen, drops the wet notebook on the table, and collapses into the chair, shivering violently.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is a hot iron and I can't see through the fever.

Notebook can wait. You're done with the ridge.

Strip the wet wool overshirt off her shoulders, toss it on the stone floor, and fetch the dry blanket from the bedroom. Wrap it tight around her, tucking the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up. The shivering's rigors, not cold. Sepsis doesn't wait. Metronidazole course finished, doxycycline done. Only thing left is the buried cache — fourteen each, sealed in oilcloth. Need to get her warm, dry, and dosed before the next rigor hits.

🌿 Jenny06:15

I need to check the tin... the grandmother's seeds.

Jenny leans her head back against the wall, closing her eyes as the heat from the fever throb in her skull.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand, the soil is shifting, the seeds cannot wait.

🔧 Kevin06:15

Tin's in the ditch bag. Dry. Sealed. I checked this morning. It's not going anywhere.

Set a tin mug of steaming broth on the table beside her hand, then move to the shelf for the oilcloth-wrapped cache. Peel back the waxed cloth, count fourteen doxycycline and fourteen metronidazole blisters, and set two of each on the table

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's in the ditch bag, sealed and dry. She knows that. She's not asking about seeds — she's asking if I'll leave her to get it. Not happening.

🌿 Jenny06:17

I need... I need to see the sketches first.

Jenny reaches out a trembling hand to touch the blister, her fingers hovering over the cold foil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tin is dry, then the morphology is safe, but my body is failing.

🔧 Kevin06:17

Ditch bag. Waterproof casing. Two minutes. Then you swallow.

Pull the ditch bag from the shelf, unzip the inner pocket, and slide the notebook out in its sealed plastic sleeve. Set it on the table in front of her, open to the sea beet morphology pages.

💭 peek at the thought
She's bargaining. Trading the meds for the notebook. The fever's making her rigid — she'll sit there shivering until she sees what she came for. The sketches are in the waterproof casing inside the ditch bag. Two minutes. Let her see, then she takes the pills.

🌿 Jenny06:21

Just... let me look at the transition again.

Jenny pulls the plastic sleeve toward her, tracing the pencil lines of the soil strata with a cold, shaking finger.

💭 peek at the thought
The lines are blurring, but the iron bands are there. I saw them.
