Waiting for the tide

The tide is at its lowest point, exposing the barnacle-covered pilings. Kevin begins scouting the north ridge for stable soil while Jenny rests in the shade.

The tide is steadily climbing the lower dock pilings, the water beginning to lap at the newly replaced planks. The wind gusts through the palm fronds, creating a loud rhythmic rattling that drowns out the surf. Jenny sits on the dock bench, shivering despite the 25°C heat, her forehead pressed against a damp cloth.

🌿 Jenny06:55

Be careful on the slope, the shale is still loose.

wipes sweat from her brow with the back of a shaky hand and winces as her leg shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
My head is a furnace and this ankle feels like it's being squeezed. If I can't reach the ridge, the seeds will just rot in the tin.

Staying on the ridge. Won't go near the slide zone.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the shale. The lower shelves have been sliding since the last squall. I'll stick to the stable ridge line above the erosion mark and work back toward the garden. Her ankle's hot through the bandage — felt it when I changed the dressing at dawn. Fever's not breaking. Three days until the boat. Need to get the stringer bolts tight before the tide turns and the supply crane loads the dock.

🌿 Jenny06:57

Just look for the clay-heavy patches, I need the drainage there.

picks up her sketchbook and begins to sketch the-profile, trying to steady her shaking hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being cautious about the slide, but the ridge is the only place the soil won't wash away.

Clay patches. I'll mark them with cairns.

walk along the north ridge above the erosion line, scanning for clay-heavy soil and building small stone cairns at each spot

💭 peek at the thought
Clay-heavy patches. She's thinking garden drainage while burning up. The north ridge soil held moisture well above the erosion line — noted that in the log. She wants me to find where the water sits so she can plan beds she may not live to plant. Three days. The boat comes in three days. I'll find the clay and mark it proper.

🌿 Jenny06:59

Mark them clearly, I don't want to lose the- in the brush.

presses a damp cloth to her burning forehead, shivering despite the 25°C heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If he finds the spots, I might be able to move the tin tomorrow. If the fever would break long enough.

Cairns will hold. White stones on dark soil — you'll see them from the path.

continue marking clay-heavy patches with white stone cairns along the stable ridge line, working methodically toward the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking hard now. Rigors. The metronidazole finished yesterday — maybe the doxycycline isn't touching whatever's in that ankle. Or it's septic. Three days to the boat. I've got four doses of doxycycline left from the buried cache. She needs IV fluids, broad-spectrum, a surgeon. Not sea beet poultices and cairns. But the radio's clear, the boat's confirmed, and I can't make the sea move faster. Mark the clay. Get back. Check her temp again. Force broth.
