The Calm Before the Front

The wind picks up slightly at night, the temperature dropping just as Kevin prepares to secure the water tank and the dinghy for the inevitable morning squ.

The night passed under a heavy, thickening atmosphere. The pressure continues to drop, signaling the approaching storm front. While Kevin successfully secured the cottage shutters and generator shed, the small leak in the west shutter persists. Jenny's fever remained high, and her ankle throbbed despite the poultice as the dawn breaks.

Check the way again, Kevin. The pressure is too low.

Take a sip of the warm broth and wince as the blanket brushes against my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in four days, I'll run out of antibiotics before this infection clears the bone.

Going now. Radio's on 2182 if the boat calls. Drink the rest.

walk to the water tank at the back wall, check the overflow channel seal and the tank level, then walk to the dock and inspect the dinghy's doubled stern spring and bow line tension at low tide, then walk back to the porch and sit beside Je

She's right. 1007 and falling. The front's sitting on us harder than the charts said. I'll walk the dock line and the tank overflow, then the dinghy warp — but I'm not leaving the porch until she's settled.

Don't stay out when the wind hits the shore.

Lean my head back against the stone wall and watch the clouds thicken.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for this to be a normal squall.

Won't. Back in five.

walk down the path to the dock, check the doubled stern spring and bow line at the mooring ring and north piling, verify the storm anchor warp off the bow is clear and the fenders are seated, then walk back up to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the sky same as me. The cloud base has dropped two hundred feet since sundown. Northeast swell will hit the dock different with this pressure.

🌿 Jenny07:45

The sky is turning the wrong color.

Rub the sweat from my eyes and listen for the first gust in the trees.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to strip the salt off the north ridge.

Northeast. Building. I'll batten the shutters and the generator shed before it hits proper.

walk to the east shutter, drive the last 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut through the greenheart spreader plate into the sister knee, then move to the west shutter and cinch the ratchet straps on the generator shed la

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it too. That green-grey bruise in the cloud base — not rain colour. Wind colour. The barometer's dropped another four millibars since I checked the dinghy. Front's accelerating.
