Evening preparations

The heat of the day begins to break slightly as the sun dips behind the grey clouds. Kevin and Jenny meet to discuss the progress on the engine and the planting plan for the heirloom seeds.

Kevin finished the Yanmar fuel line replacement and topped up the generator oil, then banked the stove with limpet broth ready for morning. Jenny reviewed the garden slope drainage plan and seed inventory, then took broth to bed.

🔧 Kevin23:06

Fuel line's done. Generator's topped. Limpets are on. What's the plan for the seeds?

wipe hands on a rag, set the wrench down on the workbench, and walk to the porch doorway where the light's better

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel line's seated clean. No weep at the filter housing or the injection pump. Generator oil topped off from the drum — thirty litres left in that drum, maybe less. Limpet bucket's on the stove. Jenny's ankle hasn't spread past the pen line. She's moving on it. Good. Now she wants to talk seeds and planting. The garden's still half weeds behind the cottage. I said I'd build a sensory garden eleven months ago. Haven't laid a stone.

🌿 Jenny23:15

I'm looking at the slope by the shrine. It looks stable enough, but I need to check the drainage again tomorrow.

Jenny traces a circle on the soil map with a pencil pencil, wincing as she shifts her weight off her left foot.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is screaming at me, but if I don't find a spot soon, my grandmother's seeds are just going to rot in that tin.

🔧 Kevin23:15

Shrine slope drains into the intercept trench. Trench holds. Bedrock's shallow — roots hit rock at thirty centimetres. Beans'll need deeper. Potatoes in the lower beds, lime them proper. You want me to dig test pits tomorrow?

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her pencil move over the map

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle hard. The pen line hasn't moved but the swelling's still there, hot under the skin. She won't say it hurts. Shrine slope — north face, shale bedrock under thin soil. Drains fast but dries fast too. Lime beds read 6.8–7.0. Untreated 5.5–5.8. Heirloom beans and sea beet need neutral. Potatoes tolerate acid. She's thinking beans on the shrine slope, potatoes in the lower beds. Smart. But she's doing it on one leg.

🌿 Jenny23:17

Yes, dig two pits near the terrace edge. I need to see exactly how much soil we actually have before I waste grandmother's seeds.

Jenny stops drawing and looks up at him, eyes narrowing as she calculates the volume in her head.

💭 peek at the thought
If the bedrock is that shallow, the heirloom varieties will never take hold. I need to know the depth.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Two pits. Spade and auger. pH strips — four left in the old kit, new kit unopened. I'll log depth and profile. You want lime hauled up there tonight or wait for the boat?

pull the spade from against the garden wall, test its weight, then grab the auger bit from the workshop shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Grandmother's beans — twenty seeds maybe, if the tin count held. No room for waste. Terrace edge is the only flat ground on that slope. Two pits, thirty centimetres square, down to bedrock or forty centimetres, whichever comes first. I'll need the spade, the auger for below the spade depth, the notebook. She'll want pH strips too — four left in the kit. Better use the old kit strips first, save the new supply boat kit. She's calculating volume. Smart. Methodical. That's why the seeds survive her.

🌿 Jenny23:25

Wait for the boat. I'm too tired to haul lime tonight, and I need the profile data first.

Jenny rubs the bridge of her nose and leans back, the throb in her ankle pulsing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't haul heavy bags tonight with this ankle, and I don't even know if the soil is right yet.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:25

Boat's five days. I'll dig at first light. You get the profile, I'll haul lime after.

set the spade and auger by the porch steps, ready for morning, then go to the stove and lift the limpet pot off the heat

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's five days out. Lime can wait. She's tired — bone tired, not just the ankle. The rain's steady now, drumming on the porch roof. She won't ask for help hauling lime later either. She'll do it herself, one-legged, unless I move first. The spade's cold in my hand. Auger bit's sharp. Two pits at the terrace edge tomorrow. First light, before the heat. I'll haul the lime sacks up the slope tonight while she sleeps. Three sacks, twenty kilos each. Doable.

🌿 Jenny23:41

Make sure the limpet broth's ready when I wake up early. I need the protein. Make sure the limpet broth's ready when I wake up early. I need the protein.

Jenny nods and turns toward the kitchen, her ankle throbbing as she shifts her weight. </think> Jenny nods and turns toward the kitchen, her ankle throbbing as she shifts her weight.

Five days is forever when you're watching your grandmother's seeds slowly die in a tin. Five days is forever when you're watching your grandmother's seeds slowly die in a tin.

Broth's ready. Covered on the stove. Fire banked.

ladle broth into two tin mugs, set one on the table for her, drink the other standing at the stove, then bank the wood stove with the last dry split and close the damper

💭 peek at the thought
She said it twice. The fever or the pain or just exhaustion looping her. Broth's hot — limpets done, corn beef fat skimmed, sea beet chopped in. Two mugs worth. She needs the salt and the iron. I'll leave it covered on the stove, bank the fire so it holds warmth till dawn. She'll wake before me. She always does.

🌿 Jenny23:44

Thank you.

Jenny takes the mug and wraps both hands around it, feeling the warmth seep into her fingertips.

💭 peek at the thought
The broth smells like salt and sea and something close to home.
