First light at the garden terrace
Dawn breaks grey and damp. Kevin stands at the garden wall with spade and auger, Jenny at the porch steps with notebook and pencil, the limpets broth steaming in tin mugs between them. The tide is still rising.
Kevin dug the first test pit at the terrace edge, calling out soil depths and textures while Jenny recorded the data and sketched the cross-section. They found the clay layer at 35 centimeters, deeper than feared, with a water table at 45 centimeters. The pH reading matched the log at 5.8, confirming the untreated soil baseline.
Kevin, the north ridge transect data shows better drainage on the west side—let's try the test pits there first. I've got the pH logs ready.
walk to garden wall with notebook, examine soil conditions where spade and auger are staged, then mark preferred test pit location with chalk.

West side it is. Two pits, one at the terrace edge, one ten meters back. We'll log depth, texture, and water table.
walk to garden wall, pick up spade and auger, begin first test pit at terrace edge

Watch for the clay layer. If we hit it less than thirty centimeters down, we might need to move the garden further up toward the ridge.
sit on the porch step, sketch the cross-section of the soil in the notebook, and note the pH reading of 5.8.

If it's shallow, we build up. Plenty of stone for walls, lime in the sack. Keep the notebook handy — I'll call out depths.
drive spade into turf at terrace edge, cut a clean square, start digging the first test pit
