A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin retrieved two damp but intact burlap sacks of lime from the supply crate and stored them in the garden shed on a dry pallet under tarp. Jenny inspected her swollen ankle while Kevin worked, then both returned to the porch as the barometer continued falling.

🌿 Jenny05:33

Kevin, did you see if the lime came through with the supply boat? And the barometer's still dropping.

Check the supply crate for lime bags.

💭 peek at the thought
The supply boat's running late again, and my ankle is throbbing through the bandages. I need to check if the lime arrived, but first I should assess whether the soil on the north ridge is stable enough for grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin05:33

Haven't looked yet. Barometer's dropping harder than the forecast said. You stay off that ankle — I'll check the crate.

walk to the supply crate on the porch and start sorting through contents

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer — 1008 and falling fast. Didn't see lime bags in the crate earlier but I was focused on the fuel and the valve. Need to check properly.

🌿 Jenny05:41

Just look for the bags. If they're not there, we wait another ten days.

Sit on the porch steps and sketch the clouds formations.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the pressure, but if that lime isn't here, the whole ridge project is just another failure. I'm tired of looking at the weeds.

🔧 Kevin05:45

Right.

pry open the crate lid and pull out items systematically, checking for burlap sacks marked lime

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching clouds — means she's reading the weather her way. Ten days without lime means the north ridge beds stay acidic, sea beet germination drops. But the barometer's the real problem now.

🌿 Jenny05:45

Check the bottom under the tarp, they usually pack the heavy stuff down.

Watch his hands while trying to ignore the throbbing in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't find it, the soil is going to stay acidic for another season. My ankle is pulsing in time with the waves hitting the rocks.

🔧 Kevin05:47

Kevin — reach deep into the crate, shifting rope coils and tinned provisions aside, feeling for burlap at the bottom

💭 peek at the thought
Good call — they always bury the heavy bags under the light cargo. My back's going to feel this tomorrow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:51

It's heavy, so it should be buried under the gear.

Lean back against the stone wall and rub my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's empty, I'm going to lose my mind. The seeds won't wait forever for a late boat.

🔧 Kevin05:51

Two bags. Bottom of the crate. Damp but intact.

haul both burlap sacks out onto the porch boards, one at a time, and set them against the wall out of the weather

💭 peek at the thought
Fingers hit burlap. Rough weave, damp from the boat hold. Two sacks. That's what we ordered. North ridge gets its lime.

🌿 Jenny05:53

Thank god." "Thank god.

Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle protests, and walk to inspect the lime sacks. </think> Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle protests, and walk to inspect the lime sacks.

💭 peek at the thought
Two bags. He found two bags. The soil on the north ridge is waiting, and the seeds are still in that tin. Two bags. He found two bags. The soil on the north ridge is waiting, and the seeds are still in that tin.

🔧 Kevin05:53

Sit back down. I'll stow them.

pick up both lime sacks and carry them around to the garden shed, stacking them on the raised pallet inside

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful. The red line up her calf hasn't faded. Antibiotics are working but the deep tissue takes time. She shouldn't be walking on it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:55

Make sure they stay dry. I don't want them clumping.

Sit on the way chair and unwrap the bandage to look at the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
If we have the lime, I can finally start the ridge. My ankle is screaming every time I shift my weight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:55

Pallet's dry. Tarp over it. They'll keep.

pull the shed door shut and latch it, then walk back to the porch where Jenny sits

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the wound herself — smart. Catches changes before I do. The shed pallet's dry, tarp over the roof ridge. Lime'll keep.
