← Day 713

the keeper's cottage · day 713 · night

Night watch and rising wind

Kevin and Jenny sit at the porch table under the storm lantern. The barometer reads 1004 hPa and falling fast. Wind gusts hit the shutters. The supply boat is due tomorrow at high tide — two-hour window — but the weather is turning. The Yanmar tested clean. The lime is stored. The mast is stepped. The ankle is dressed. Now they wait and watch the sky.

The air is heavy and humid, the flat sky darkening to a bruised purple as the pressure drops steadily. Inside the cottage, the sound of water dripping from the leaking shutter marks the rhythm of the approaching storm. The supply boat is a lost cause for tomorrow, leaving them to worry about the seeds and the coming rain.

Barometer's talking. Boat's not coming tomorrow.

pour coffee from the pot into both tin mugs, set one in front of Jenny, sit back with my own

💭 peek at the thought
Four millibars in an hour. Northeast back coming. She's watching the lantern flame dance — knows what it means. Boat won't make the window. She knows that too. Neither of us said it.

The lime is already in the shed. That is what matters.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, feeling the throb in my ankle pulse against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it like the weather is just another door he closed.

Aye. Lime's safe.

lift my mug, blow across the steam, watch the lantern shadow jump on the porch boards

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Lime's the only thing we can't improvise. Everything else — fuel, flour, the valve — we stretch. But she's steering the conversation to what's done, not what's coming. The ankle's throbbing in time with the barometer.

And the north ridge is still waiting.

Look out at the dark silhouette of the garden, tracing the line where the weeds meet the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
Safe is a relative term when the soil is still screaming.

Transect's logged. Remediation waits on weather.

set the mug down, thumb tracing the chip in the tin rim

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge. Carex transect's done — logged the elevation gradient, salt gland density, the whole picture. But the remediation's barely started. Five percent. Lime's in the shed, auger's cleared, pH map drawn. Just needs hands and a weather window. She's thinking about the garden too. The weeds still winning behind the cottage. The sensory garden I talked about for eleven months and never built.

🌿 Jenny06:07

The lime needs to be mixed before the ground forgets what it means to be acidic.

Pull the grandmother's seed tin from my pocket, the metal cool against my palm despite the rising heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The chip is from when he dropped it in the tide pool, trying to impress me with his field notes.

🔧 Kevin06:08

Salt rain'll fight the lime. Wait for the window after.

reach for the pot, top up her mug first, then mine

💭 peek at the thought
Ground forgets. That's a Jenny phrase — poetic and true. Acidic soil locks nutrients. Lime unlocks them. But it needs rain to wash in, and the rain coming with this front will be salt-heavy, wind-driven. Could undo the work. The tin in her pocket — grandmother's seeds. Forty-odd varieties, labels gone. She wants to plant them in the remediated beds. I said plant them, see what comes. She laughed. First time in weeks.

🌿 Jenny06:27

I can't wait forever. The seeds will rot.

Open the seed tin and pull out the tomato packets, checking the edges for grey fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
He always thinks about the window, never the life inside the seeds.
