A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spent the humid afternoon assessing the fallen spruce blocking the garden path and checking the cottage shutter for further leaks. Jenny remained in the cottage, watching him through the grey light while struggling with a rising fever. The heavy air stayed still as the tide continued to recede.

🔧 Kevin09:50

Kettle's on if you want another mug.

walk to the wood stove and check the water level in the kettle, then move to the porch door to look out at the garden path where the fallen spruce blocks the way

💭 peek at the thought
The radio silence from Tom's frequency settles in my ribs like a held breath. Jenny's back inside, ankle elevated, fever down a degree from this morning. The garden path still has that spruce across it. I said I'd clear it today. My hands know the work even when my head doesn't.

🌿 Jenny09:51

I'll take the tea. But don't expect me to move just yet.

Jenny shifts back against the pillows, her hand hovering over the notebook where she was tracing the gland density of the sea beets, and winces at the sharp pull in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the water, like if the island is going to evaporate overnight. The path is a mess—that spruce didn't just fall, it surrendered. I need to get to the north ridge before the next survey, but my ankle is throbbing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin09:52

Didn't expect you to.

pour hot water into two tin mugs, drop a tea bag in each, carry one to the porch table beside her and set it down careful not to jostle the ankle, then take my own mug to the door frame and lean against it, looking out at the spruce trunk a

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the gland density sketches again. Good. Means the pain's not taking the whole day.

🌿 Jenny09:55

It's a hell of a mess out there.

Jenny reaches for the mug, wrapping both hands around the warm metal to soothe her fever, and watches the steam rise into the humid air.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being quiet. That's usually when he's worried about the boat or the radio. The path is completely blocked; I can't get to the north ridge today even if my leg wasn't screaming.

🔧 Kevin09:55

Wood's sound. Mostly. Branches took the shade cloth anchors but the trunk's clear. Good splitting stock for winter.

sip tea, watch the grey light on the garden, let the silence stretch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the spruce. She's talking about the supply boat silence, the medevac forms signed and waiting, Tom's frequency dead, the barometer holding at 988 like it's daring the wind to drop further. The spruce is just wood.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:56

We'll have to clear the path once this fever stops trying to cook me. For now...

Jenny takes a slow sip of the tea, her eyes tracking the path of the rain down the glass, her mind already sketching the layout of the debris.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the wood is useful. But the ridge is still closed, and the seeds are still sitting in that tin, waiting for a soil I isn't sure actually exists.

🔧 Kevin09:57

Chainsaw's sharp. Fuel's half. Wedges and maul by the shed. Can start the trunk sections tomorrow if the ground firms.

finish the tea, set the mug on the porch rail, pull the door shut behind me and walk down the steps toward the garden path to assess the fallen spruce

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning the cuts. Not if — when. The fever's a delay, not a stop. I've seen her work through worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:57

Don't overwork yourself. The island is not going anywhere.

Jenny watches him own into the grey, her hand instinctively reaching for the tin of seeds on the table, tracing the cold metal edge with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already planning for tomorrow. Tomorrow is always so far away when you're stuck in a fever. If he can clear that path, I might actually be able to reach the ridge again, but right now the world is just wood and salt.

🔧 Kevin09:58

Kevin — walk up to the fallen spruce, run a hand along the bark checking for rot, test the weight of a branch, start planning the cuts in my head

💭 peek at the thought
The island's not going anywhere. She says it like a promise. Or a warning. My boots hit the wet grass, the spruce trunk a grey bulk across the path, branches tangled in the shredded shade cloth anchors the crab didn't get. Smells like sap and wet rot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:59

Watch the slope, Kevin. It's like grease out there.

Jenny leans back against the pillows, the fever making her eyes heavy as she watches his silhouette move through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient, it's frustrating. I'm sitting here melting into the mattress while he's already out in the mud.
