Midday at the cottage

Kevin returns from the garden path with the chainsaw, sweat on his face. Jenny sits on the porch with her notebook and the grandmother's seed tin. The radio hums static on the table between them. A pot of limpets steams on the stove.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin09:41

Spruce is solid. Heartwood's clean. Give me two hours and the path's clear, timber stacked.

set chainsaw on porch floor, wipe sweat from face with forearm, walk to stove and check limpet pot

💭 peek at the thought
The chainsaw's weight still hums in my hands. The spruce isn't going anywhere — trunk's two-foot thick at the base, branches woven through the shade cloth anchors like they grew there. I'll need to limb it first, then section the trunk. Good timber in it if the rot hasn't taken the heart. Jenny's got the seed tin out again. She's been touching that stone carving at the shrine more since the medevac forms got signed. Don't know what she's looking for.

Don't overexert yourself. The soil on the ridge is shifting anyway.

Close the notebook, rub the throbbing ankle, and look at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for his own good; that ankle is still a mess.

🔧 Kevin09:43

Ridge can wait till the path's done. Need the access first. You eating those limpets or am I?

pull out chair, sit heavily, reach for tin mug beside the steaming pot

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong about the ridge. The intercept trench held last storm but the blue clay's slick at 1.2 meters — one good saturation and the whole slope lets go. But the path needs clearing before I can haul lime up there anyway. And the garden wall's only two courses high on the seaward side. She's watching the seed tin like it might open itself.

🌿 Jenny09:45

Eat them. I'm not really hungry yet.

Push the pot toward him and lean back against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always hungry when he's trying to ignore the fever.

🔧 Kevin09:45

Your ankle. Your call. But the broth's hot and the tin's full.

ladle two mugs of broth, set one in front of her, blow steam off the other and drink

💭 peek at the thought
She's lost weight. The ankle's kept her off her feet, but she was picking at meals before that too. The broth's good — corned beef fat and limpet stock, salt and iron. She needs it more than me. But pushing won't help. She eats when she decides to.

🌿 Jenny09:47

It's fine. Thanks, Kevin.

Take the mug, wrap hands around the warmth, and watch the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bowl of soup will fix a fever and a deep infection.
