A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
The air is heavy and still, the overcast sky holding the weight of the coming rain. Jenny lies on the cottage cot, her ankle throbbing with a rhythmic heat that resists the cooling while Kevin prepares the treatment. He checks the generator's hum, the steady vibration a grounding pulse against the humid silence, then turns to the radio for the morning check.
Kevin — walk to the kitchen, pull the stool up to the radio shelf, and switch the shortwave to 2182 kHz. Listen.

Static? Or just the atmosphere?
Lean in closer to the speaker, turning the dial by a hair to try and catch a signal through the hiss.

Just the atmosphere. Brazilian broadcast faded an hour ago. Nothing since but the skip.
Sit on the stool, elbows on the shelf, and let the static wash over me. Watch the dial glow.

The skip is getting too long out here.
Reach into my pocket and touch the cold metal of the seed tin, feeling the weight against my hip.
