Evening return and generator test

Jenny returns from the north ridge as Kevin shuts down the generator after the Yanmar test run. The wind has picked up, palms thrashing, and the sky shows the first high cloud streaks of the approaching front. They meet at the cottage porch, both hungry, the radio playing static between weather bulletins.

Kevin works on measuring the bronze for the Yanmar sleeve while the sky thickens. Jenny continues the Carex transect on the lower terrace, noting observations in her notebook. The pressure holds steady despite the gathering clouds.

🔧 Kevin03:00

Yanmar’s holding pressure. Sleeve’s seated right. Generator’s cooled enough to touch now. You bring anything back from the ridge?

wipe hands on rag, turn off generator fuel valve, step down from porch to meet Jenny halfway, nod at her muddy boots

💭 peek at the thought
Generator held steady at 28 bar under load, Yanmar ran clean. Sleeve measurements are good. Jenny’s back from the ridge — she’s quiet, but her boots are caked with north ridge mud. I’m hungry, but the engine’s the priority. If we’re going to leave this island, the dinghy needs to move under its own power.

The Carex is struggling on the lower terrace, but I got enough samples for the notebook.

wipe sweat from brow with a sleeve, adjust the heavy pack of sketches, look at the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
my knees are screaming and I haven't eaten since yesterday, but the pressure is dropping and I need to check those wayets.

🔧 Kevin03:01

Good work. Lower terrace’s where the salt spray hits hardest — no surprise it’s thin. You want to rinse off before we eat? I’ll start heating water.

move past her toward the cottage door, pull open the screen, gesture toward the rain tank tap and wash basin beside the door, keep voice low and steady

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tired. The pack’s heavy, and she’s not meeting my eyes. The front’s coming in fast — those high streaks are thickening. We’ll lose light soon, and the radio’s still iffy on that insulator. I should’ve checked the aerial tension after taping it.

🌿 Jenny03:03

I'll rinse. Is there any of those limpets left?

drop the notebook on the porch table with a heavy thud, walk toward the basin, rub the back of my aching neck.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even stand up straight, but the salt on my skin is making me itch.

🔧 Kevin03:03

Two portions in the skillet. Cold. I’ll heat them up with the fat.

step into the kitchen, unlatch the screen door and hook it back, set the cast iron skillet on the wood stove top, spoon corned beef fat from the jar into the pan, strike a match and light the kindling under the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Two portions left from this morning’s cook. She’s asking because she knows what we have — she tracks it better than I do. The limpets are in the skillet on the stove, cold now. I’ll warm them with the last of the corned beef fat. The wind’s hitting the porch hard now; the screen door bangs. I should latch it.

🌿 Jenny03:05

Check the barometer after we eat.

run cold water over my hands, scrub the grit and salt from my forearms, watch the water swirl down the drain.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of that fat and salt is making my stomach growl loud. I just need to sit down.

🔧 Kevin03:05

It’s on the shelf. I’ll read it while the pan heats.

glance up at the barometer mounted above the radio, tap the glass face with a fingertip, turn back to the skillet and nudge the limpets with a fork to keep them from sticking

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the pressure drop same as me. 1009 and rising earlier, but that was before the front showed its teeth. The barometer’s on the kitchen shelf — I can see it from the stove. She doesn’t need to tell me. The limpets are hissing in the fat now, smell cutting through the damp air.

🌿 Jenny03:07

It's 1007 and still moving fast.

dry my hands on a rough towel, walk to the porch table, sit heavily in the chair that creaks under me.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is still falling. If it drops further, we need to secure the dinghy again.
