Approaching rain front

The flat sky has finally broken into a grey haze, and the first cool gusts of wind blow in from the ridge.

Kevin replaced the cracked shortwave aerial insulator with the spare porcelain unit, taping the join with self-amalgamating tape. Jenny finished her field sketch of the wayx leaf and prepared to head out for the north ridge Carex transect before the light faded.

Jenny — wipe sweat from my brow with a forearm and sketch the serrated edge of a wayx leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is lying to me; it says it's rising but the wind knows better.

🔧 Kevin02:53

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the shortwave aerial insulator, eyes on the crack under the tape

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet. Good. Means she's seeing something. Weather's turning proper now — that grey haze off the ridge, wind shifting cool. Barometer was 1003 and falling last I looked. Southwest swell building. Generator's been humming steady all morning under load, drying the seed trays. Yanmar housing's clean, bronze stock measured. Just need to cut the sleeve and press it. But first — aerial insulator. That crack's been growing. Self-amalgamating tape won't hold another blow. If the radio goes, we're blind.

🌿 Jenny02:54

The tape is holding for now, Kevin.

look up from my sketch and watch the wind shake the palm fronds.

💭 peek at the thought
If that housing goes, we're completely blind to the boat in two days.

🔧 Kevin02:55

Spare's in the crate. Need to swap it before the next front.

open the wooden crate on the porch and pull out the spare porcelain insulator

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed. Of course she did. The tape's holding — for now. But "for now" is the problem. That crack's been breathing with every gust. One good squall and the insulator arcs, and we're deaf and dumb out here. Spare porcelain's in the crate on the porch. Should've swapped it yesterday. Didn't.

🌿 Jenny02:57

Keep it dry. I need to finish this transect before the light gets too low.

close my notebook and stand up, stretching the ache in my lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the front, but I'm too tired to caring about tools right now.

🔧 Kevin02:57

Take the handheld. Channel 16, weather on 1. Back before dark.

unscrew the cracked insulator from the mast base, keeping the coax clear, and fit the spare porcelain one with self-amalgamating tape over the join

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the light. Cloud ceiling's dropping fast. Transect up on the north ridge — she'll need two hours minimum to finish the lower terrace and get back before dark. Wind's already picking up. She'll be exposed on that ridge. Should tell her to take the radio. Won't. She'd just say it's dead weight. I'll swap the insulator, then cut the bronze sleeve. Lathe's in the shed. Generator's running — can power the lathe off it. Two jobs before dark if I move.
