Night watch and letter
Rain lashes the cottage walls. The lantern burns low on the table. Kevin sits at the drafting table with the letter to Tom half-written, pen scratching. Jenny lies on the loft ladder's lower rung, ankle propped on a pack, eyes closed but not sleeping. The generator hums through the floorboards. The barometer needle hasn't moved.
Kevin adjusted the lantern wick to a steadier burn while Jenny rested against the cottage wall, her ankle still tender beneath the sea beet poultice. The barometer held at 979 hPa with a falling tide, and a wooden crate from a lost container ship rolled in the surf beyond the dock.
You want the lantern lower?
Set the pen down beside the half-written letter, turn toward the loft ladder where Jenny rests.

I'm fine, Kevin. Just watching the shadows move.
I keep my eyes closed, nudging the pack under my ankle to shift the pressure, listening to the scratch of his pen against the paper.

Shadows don't move on their own. Means the lantern's burning uneven.
Reach over, turn the wick down a notch with calloused fingers, the flame shrinking to a steadier blue core.

It's better that way. Less heat.
I let out a long, slow breath, finally letting my weight settle against the cool stone of the cottage wall.
